Which Member of Congress Invited Kim Davis to the State of the Union?

Since news broke that Kim Davis will be attending tonight’s State of the Union address, advocates and reporters alike have been clamoring to find out the answer to one question: Who invited her?

Davis attracted the national spotlight last year when she flouted the rule of law to discriminate against LGBT Americans seeking to obtain marriage licenses in Rowan County, Kentucky. While Davis attracted widespread disdain from most of America, she became an overnight sensation among the most conservative politicians — and yet Davis, who will be accompanied by Mat Staver of the notoriously anti-LGBT group Liberty Counsel, has refused to say which lawmaker invited her.

Liberty Counsel’s Communications Director told MSNBC, “We are not publicizing that information. I don’t think we’ll ever publicize it.”

And even more curiously, no Member of Congress has owned up to it either. While some reports pointed to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Jordan’s office has apparently declined even knowing who Kim Davis is. Now, we don’t know if it’s Jordan or not, but here’s bit of advice to all Members of Congress: If you’re too embarrassed to admit to inviting Kim Davis to the State of Union, then don’t invite Kim Davis to the State of the Union.

Davis won’t be the only anti-LGBT activists attendance. Dr. Everett Piper, president of Oklahoma Wesleyan University, who just last week boasted about being “proud” to lead an institution that discriminates against LGBT students, will also be there as a guest of Oklahoma Senator James Lankford.

On the bright side, President Obama’s pro-equality legacy will be on full display as marriage equality plaintiff Jim Obergefell and Ryan Reyes, the boyfriend of Larry ‘Daniel’ Kaufman who was killed in the San Bernardino shooting last month, will both join First Lady Michelle Obama in the President’s box.
