Though we may joke about the trials and tribulations of visiting family during Christmas, let’s take a moment to remember a sad fact for gay and trans people: in our community, holidays can be especially stressful when visiting family, and perhaps visiting family is not possible at all.

Pantene partnered with the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles (did you know there is a trans chorus of Los Angeles?) to create a music video that shows how some people struggle to find their smile. It’s a lovely video, and there are also interviews with some of the chorus members on Pantene’s YouTube page. Pantene is woke. Take a look:

These choruses are based in the tradition of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, which established its mission statement in 1969 on the night Harvey Milk was murdered: sing in places where we may not be welcome, because music has the power to heal.

The idea certainly caught on, and now there are gay men’s choruses all over North America. Perhaps the Puerto Vallarta Gay Men’s Chorus (did you know there’s a Puerto Vallarta gay men’s chorus?) should show up at the Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center and sing in the lobby, because management at that hotel has not been kind to our kind lately.
