VIDEO: Queen Latifah accepts for Outstanding TV Movie or Limited Series at the #glaadawards in LA

At Saturday’s 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, the HBO biopic Bessie received the award for Outstanding TV Movie or Limited series. Actress and musician Queen Latifah, executive producer and star of Bessie, accepted the award.

The HBO film Bessie tells the story of Bessie Smith, the legendary bisexual jazz and blues singer, known as “The Empress of Blues.” A cultural icon of the ’20s and ’30s, Bessie follows the story of Smith’s career and her personal life, including relationships with both men and women. The film also stars Michael K Williams, Khandi Alexander, Mo’Nique as queer blues singer Ma Rainey, and Tika Sumpter as Lucille, a performer and Bessie’s love interest. Bessie is written and directed by out filmmaker Dee Rees. Rees also wrote and directed the film Pariah which received the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film – Limited Release at the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Bessie won four Primetime Emmy Awards including Outstanding Television Movie.
