Sense8, co-created by both Wachowski sisters, follows the lives of eight strangers around the world who all are mysteriously mentally and emotionally connected. Among these characters are Nomi, a blogger and hacker who happens to be transgender and lives with her girlfriend, Amanita, in San Francisco. Another of the sensates is Lito, a closeted gay Mexican actor, and his boyfriend Hernando. In an interview with GLAAD, actress Jamie Clayton, who portrays Nomi on the show, said that she values the uniqueness of the LGBT storylines in the series and that Nomi’s story “isn’t about her transition…her transness. Her story is about strength, courage and love.”

Premiering on Netflix in June 2015, the first season of Sense8 received wide acclaim by audiences and critics alike for its ambitious storytelling and inclusive cast. The series has been renewed for a second season which is currently filming.

Additional awards will be presented at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York City at the historic Waldorf Astoria on Saturday, May 14. Tickets are available now at glaad.org/mediaawards.
