Two gay Prime Ministers – and partners – casually hang out together

A few years ago, the idea of an openly gay Prime Minister or President of any country seemed unfathomable. However, since Iceland broke the mold back in 2009 with its gay, former Prime Minister (Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir), other countries have followed suit.

Serbia’s Prime Minister, Ana Brnabic, has just completed an official visit to Luxembourg. One of the things the two European countries have in common is that both of their political leaders are queer.

Because of this, the visit offered the rare sight of two gay leaders – and their partners – hanging out together. And hey… visibility matters!

Luxembourg’s Xavier Bettel posted to Twitter on Sunday saying he was looking forward to hosting Brnabic and her partner, Milica Durdic.

Tomorrow i ll recieve officially the @SerbianPM , tonight @GDestenay and myself are happy to welcome our friends @anabrnabic and Milica and having a visit of @CityLuxembourg together. XB pic.twitter.com/fTs0bRxztd

He posted photos of himself, his husband Gauthier Destenay, and the two women.

He’s continued to post photos of the foursome, concluding last night, when the official visit ended with a friendly game between the two countries’ national soccer teams.

Brnabic was delighted her country’s team won, posting her own message and photos to social media.

Democratic Party politician Bettel, 46, became Prime Minister of Luxembourg in 2013. This is not the first time he has had official visits with other gay heads of government, having previously visited Ireland and its gay Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar.

Brnabic, 43, became Prime Minister of her country in 2017. Earlier this year, her partner gave birth to a child. It was the first time a same-sex couple have had a child while one served as Prime Minister of a country.

However, some local LGBTQ advocates have criticized her for not doing more to legislate for LGBTQ rights. The conservative Balkan country still does not have same-sex marriage nor allow gay people to adopt.
