TurnOUT NC Ramps Up Mobilization Efforts for Pro-Equality Candidates in North Carolina
Over the past week, TurnOUT North Carolina ramped up our voter mobilization efforts in both Charlotte and the Triangle region. A project of the Human Rights Campaign PAC and Equality NC Action Fund PAC, TurnOUT NC is working across North Carolina to mobilize pro-equality voters and elect pro-equality legislators who are willing to repeal HB2.
Today, there are an estimated 255,800 LGBTQ adults living in North Carolina — a substantial population given that the state was won in the last three presidential elections by an average of 180,500 votes. The LGBTQ voting bloc in North Carolina will play a pivotal role in the presidential, gubernatorial and other down ballot races.
The joint endorsements by HRC and ENC include:
For House of Representatives: Rep. John Ager (D), Cynthia Ball (D), Chaz Beasley (D) Mary Belk (D), Jane Campbell (UNA), Sue Counts (D), Terence Everitt (D), Jennifer Ferrell (D), Judge Joe John (D), Rochelle Rivas (D) Rep. Brian Turner (D).
For State Senate: Sen. Jay Chaudhuri (D), Sen. Jeff Jackson (D), Sen. Joyce Waddell (D) and Susan Evans.
HRC and Equality North Carolina have both previously endorsed Roy Cooper’s campaign for Governor.
Over the past week, our teams have also spoken with over 800 HRC and ENC members and supporters recruiting them to join our local efforts. In Charlotte, we have opened a new office space at the North Carolina Music Factory in the Uptown area. Our team of staff and volunteers defied the rainy weather this past weekend, spending most of Saturday making 700 calls for two of the endorsed candidates: Chaz Beasley for House District 92 and Jane Campbell for House District 98. With clear blue skies on Sunday, the team hit the streets canvassing for Mary Belk for House District 88, knocking on 120 doors in South Charlotte.
Working from our office space just blocks from the North Carolina General Assembly in downtown Raleigh, our team made 300 calls for for Jennifer Ferrell for House District 36 and were joined on the phones by Terence Everitt for House District 35 making calls to voters in his district. Our Triangle based team has also canvassed for both Ferrell and Everitt over the past week, knocking on doors of voters in his district to help raise awareness of state level races on the ballot in November.
