Transgender woman shot at by 12-year-old boy in Orlando
A 12-year-old boy has been arrested in Orlando for opening fire on a transgender woman.
Shandebine Sherrington, 26, said the boy called her anti-gay slurs before shooting at her seven times on Thursday (30 July) night. She was not hit.
‘I was walking along Church Street, going towards a friend’s house, when I was approached by a 12-year-old saying he was going to kill me,’ the victim told News 13.
‘I don’t know who this individual was and he started shooting at me, chasing me multiple places to shoot at me.’
Sherrington said when she heard the gun was out of bullets, she turned around and started chasing Smith while on the phone to police.
‘I was going to beat him if I would’ve caught him,’ she told WFTV.
The boy, later identified as Joseph Smith, was arrested at the scene and charged with attempted murder and grand theft of a firearm.
A stolen gun was found in a nearby field.
Sherrington said she believed the attack was a hate crime and that it was not the first time she had been targeted for being transgender.
She said she was shot seven times in her leg in an attempted robbery in January last year.
Smith lives with his grandmother, who said he had snuck out of the house that night without her knowledge. She said he has been taking medications for ‘mood swings’ since 2009 and was on probation for trying to steal a pellet gun earlier in the summer.
Smith was not given bond.
