Transgender Community Rallies in Support of Hillary Clinton
Ahead of the 2016 election, more and more transgender advocates and leaders are announcing their support for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Trans United for Hillary, a volunteer effort dedicated to mobilizing transgender people and their allies, launched yesterday.
“During the course of the 2016 election, Trans United for Hillary will provide volunteer opportunities, host events, and release resources for transgender people and their allies to show support for Hillary Clinton,” the group explained. “From reforming policies related to passports for transgender people to incorporating LGBT rights into U.S. foreign policy, Hillary has a record of results on transgender equality. This election, Hillary has outlined the most detailed plan for transgender equality ever released by a presidential candidate and has the experience and skills necessary to build on the progress of the last decade.”
Several HRC members, supporters and leaders, including Sarah McBride, Angelica Ross, Ames Simmons, Blossom Brown, Geena Rocero, Jay Brown, Lou Weaver and Meghan Stabler, are a part of the organization’s steering committee.
“I’m honored to join this amazing group of transgender advocates as we work to elect Hillary Clinton,” said Jay Brown. “Secretary Clinton not only has the strongest and most detailed policy plan to improve the lives of transgender people, but as president, she’d be an exceptionally strong force in ensuring we do not lose the legal progress that we’ve made.”
HRC announced its endorsement of Clinton last month at a campaign event in Des Moines, Iowa.
Secretary Clinton has made LGBT equality a pillar of her campaign. She has vowed to fight for the Equality Act and her detailed LGBT policy platform specifically calls for dropping the ban on open transgender military service, outlawing dangerous “conversion therapy” for minors, ending the epidemic of transgender violence, and supporting HIV prevention and affordable treatment, among other proposals that would advance equality and support the LGBT community.
