The Veronicas implore Australia PM to legalize gay marriage
Rock duo The Veronicas have written an open letter imploring the Australian Prime Minister to legalize gay marriage in their home country.
The twin sisters posted a video of them reading the letter after returning from touring the US, where gay marriage was legalized in all 50 states in June.
‘The example set by government is so powerful and so influential, and that’s why we’re speaking to you,’ they say in the YouTube clip.
‘We’re here today, speaking to you in front of Australia and the world, to say we need equality NOW and we need change NOW.
‘The conversation for Marriage Equality is no longer a question of IF but now a question of WHEN. Marriage Equality is inevitable!’
Jessica and Lisa Origliasso, who performed at a gay marriage rally in Brisbane over the weekend, asked Abbot to give his party a conscience vote when the cross-party Marriage Equality Bill is presented before him this week.
‘Mr Abbott, you have missed the opportunity to become a world revolutionary leader on this matter and now it’s time to align with the growing number of governments who have paved the way for us, and not continue our alignment with governments who persist in restricting equal human rights and social progression for its people and country,’ they say.
‘Tradition founded upon laws of discrimination and prejudice does not deserve sanctity in the name of history. It’s time to live in a country that recognizes all people as EQUAL.’
