The GLAAD Wrap: Troye Sivan releases album; 'The Fosters', 'Queen of Bounce' renewed; and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) The Lady in the Van opens in select cities this weekend. This film adaptation of the autobiographical play by out playwright, Alan Bennett, depicts the story of the mild-mannered London playwright (played by Alex Jennings) and the woman (Dame Maggie Smith) who lived in her van parked in his driveway for 15 years. Check out the trailer below and find a screening near you.

2) Awards season is getting underway with several LGBT-inclusive films earning prestigious accolades.  After its highly anticipated release two weeks ago, the drama Carol won several awards at the New York Film Critics Circle including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography. The 25th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards also took place this week where Tangerine won the Audience Award with Mya Taylor, the film’s star, taking home the award for Breakthrough Actor.  The Diary of a Teenage Girl’s Bel Powley won Best Actress.  

3) This week saw the renewal of multiple LGBT-inclusive TV shows being announced. ABC Family’s The Fosters, about a lesbian couple raising their mix of biological and adopted children, has been renewed for a fourth season. The announcement was made ahead of the winter premiere, The Fosters returns January 25. Fuse has renewed hit series, Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce, for a fifth season. Another of Fuse’s shows, Transcendent, a documentary series following the triumphs and struggles of a group of transgender San Francisco cabaret performers, will be returning for a second season. NBC announced that Emmy Award-winning host, Jane Lynch, will return with season four of NBC’s hit party time series, Hollywood Game Night.

4) In other TV news, HBO released the trailer for the fifth season of Girls. Viewers can catch a few appearances by Hannah’s gay ex-boyfriend Elijah (out actor Andrew Rannells) in the video, Girls returns February 21.  Watch the trailer below.

5) The debut album from out singer, actor and YouTuber Troye Sivan, was released today.  His first full-length album, titled Blue Neighbourhood, arrives only a few months after he dropped his latest EP Wild. Sivan recently premiered his “Blue Neighbourhood” music video trilogy following two childhood friends who fall in love. Blue Neighbourhood is available for download on iTunes now, while Target carries a special edition with two bonus tracks.

6) The out Nashville-based singer-songwriter Daphne Willis has released a new pop EP called Get It.  The first single “Done with Bein’ Done” was co-written by Meghan Trainor and you can check out the music video below.

7) Bisexual artist Sia has just released the third track off her upcoming album, This is Acting, called “One Million Bullets.” The pop singer recently revealed that she “wrote all the songs on the album for other people, but they somehow kept finding their way back to [her].”  The full album will be available on January 29 with the first three songs available on iTunes now.

8) The feature film Happy Birthday, Marsha!, about transgender artist and advocate Marsha P. Johnson just before the 1969 Stonewall Riots, is looking for funding help to cover post-production costs. Reina Gossett and Sasha Wortzel–the writing, directing, and producing team– have been sharing the story of trans advocates, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, for nearly a decade.  The film stars Mya Taylor (Tangerine) as Johnson with Zackary Drucker, artist and producer on the Golden Globe-winning TV show Transparent, as consulting producer.  Find out more at the Happy Birthday, Marsha!
