1) Warner Bros.’ Gotham City Sirens will be moving forward with David Ayer set to direct and produce. The all-female DC villains movie will be based on the 2009 comic story of the same name, featuring characters Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman. Should the creative team follow the comic book’s storyline, the film will show Harley Quinn’s romantic relationship with Poison Ivy. Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley, first seen in this year’s Suicide Squad.
2) Dome Karukoski’s much anticipated filmTom of Finland dropped a full trailer. The film stars Pekka Strang as Touko Laaksonen, a World War II veteran and artist whose homoerotic drawings became synonymous with the fight against homophobia in the late 20th century. He is known for his stylized and exaggerated depictions of masculinity that became iconic in gay popular culture. There is no release date yet set, but the film is expected in 2017.
3) The 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning has been inducted into the National Film Registry, whose mission is to preserve films that the Library of Congress deems “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The film, directed by Jennie Livingston, shows the underground world of New York’s ball scene. It sheds light on issues the LGBTQ community faces while also exploring the culture. On January 6, Netflix will release documentary Growing Up Coy.
4) In other TV news, TBS has renewed the inclusive shows People of Earth and Search Party for second seasons. TV Land has cancelled Impastor after its second season. The show told the story of a man posing as a gay pastor in a small town.
5) Lady Gaga released her music video for “Million Reasons,” a song from her recent album Joanne. The emotional video picks up right where “Perfect Illusion” left off. It gives a glimpse into the singer’s life and family.
6) On Wednesday, the second issue of comic book Namesake was released. This is the only original series from bi writer Steve Orlando this year. The BOOM! Studios comic follows a queer character, Jordan Molossus, who embarks on a mission to deliver the remains of his fathers to Ektae, another world. But Ektae only interconnects with Earth once every seven years, so Jordan must brave the strange magical place to put his father to rest before time runs out.
