Every week, the GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend!

1) Documentary Susanne Bartsch: On Top opens in limited theaters Friday. The film follows the titular party promoter and activist though the lens of the past and present, focusing on both her artistic expression and the work she did as an ally to the LGBTQ community. There is special attention paid to her iconic 1989 fundraiser in support of those living with HIV and AIDS, as well as testimony from several drag queens on how Bartsch has informed their styles and ideals. Susanne Bartsch: On Top is currently playing in theaters and will be released digitally September 11.

2) The first trailer has been released for festival hit The Favourite, a historical drama that stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz. The story focuses on the relationship between Queen Anne of Great Britain and Duchess Sarah Churchill, and how the arrival of Sarah’s cousin threatens this closeness. Watch the trailer for The Favourite below, and catch the film when it comes out on November 23. The first clip also has been released for film Tell it to the Bees, a drama starring Holliday Grainger and out bisexual actress Anna Paquin as two women who fall in love in 1950s Scotland. Grainger plays a mother whose marriage is falling apart, and begins to grow closer to a doctor (Paquin) who has just returned home. It is currently playing at the Toronto International Film Festival. 3) In other film news, Carol screenwriter and out lesbian Phyllis Nagy will make her directorial debut with So Much Love, a Dusty Springfield biopic starring Gemma Arterton. Nagy has written the screenplay as well, and So Much Love is expected to start filming in early 2019. Arterton will also star in period drama Vita & Virginia, a new film coming out of TIFF that documents the relationship between Vita Sackville West (Arterton) and Virginia Woolf, based on love letters written between the two. 4) A short documentary dance film Waiting for Color was released last week. The film seeks to call attention to the persecution and violence against LGBTQ people in Chechnya. It features real testimony from persecuted individuals set to a choreographed dance. Waiting for Color is available to watch below, but there is a content warning: this film includes detailed descriptions of violence and sexual assault.

5) The trailer has been released for Netflix’s dark animated comedy BoJack Horseman. The show follows the titular depressed horse, as well as a colorful ensemble, which includes asexual character and BoJack’s former roommate, Todd. One of only two asexual characters on television, we hope to see more of Todd’s story unfold in the new season, as well as more asexual and aromantic characters on television. A teaser was also released for the next season of Will & Grace, where many weddings are foreshadowed, and the core four fight for the bouquet. 6) Out comedian and actor Billy Eichner has announced new episodes of his hit  show Billy on the Street. The popular show follows Eichner and a celebrity guest, as well as unsuspecting New Yorkers as he asks them trivia questions, games are played, and more hijinks ensue. Guests for the new episodes include Tiffany Haddish, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and out SNL star Kate McKinnon. Episodes will be released on YouTube and Funny or Die. In other TV news, GLAAD Media Award recipient Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s newest season was upped to 18 episodes from 13. Brooklyn Nine-Nine premieres midseason on NBC.

7) Comedy Central has greenlit a new digital series Unsend, to be hosted by out gay comedian Joel Kim Booster and trans comedian Patti Harrison. The show will look into odd social media trends and reactions to current events. It will also include correspondents, celebrity interviews, and entertainment and sports news. Booster and Harrison are both staples of today’s comedy scene, watch Harrison perform stand up on The Tonight Show below.

8) Lesbian rapper Young M.A released a music video for her single “Wahlinn” on Tuesday. The newest song is another tease for her long anticipated debut album Herstory in the Making, due to come out this fall. Out singer Sam Smith also released a music video for his new song with Calvin Harris, “Promises.” The video shows a ball in New York and features dancers such as Kia Labeija, Carlos Lanvin, and other notable figures of the ballroom scene.

9) Queer singer and songwriter MNEK released his long awaited debut full length album Language on Friday. The album showcases his signature pop sound, and proves him as a formidable force in pop music. His writing addresses racism and homophobia in the track “Crazy World,” showing the necessity of more queer black voices in pop music. The album is now available wherever music is sold.

10) Iconic lesbian comedians Ellen DeGeneres and Wanda Sykes both announced big Netflix news this week. DeGeneres will be releasing Relatable, her first stand-up special in 15 years, on December 18, while Sykes has announced her first Netflix special, and fifth standup special overall to air on the streaming service in 2019. 

11) The People’s Choice Award nominations have been announced, with 43 categories for fans to vote on. Nominations include several LGBTQ people, as well as inclusive film and TV, with highlights such as Love, Simon, Deadpool 2, Blockers, and Crazy Rich Asians in film categories; One Day at a Time, Black Lightning, and Queer Eye in TV categories; and LGBTQ individuals such as Gigi Gorgeous, Hannah Gadsby, and Adam Rippon. 12) Filmmaker Scott Bloom is currently raising funds for post-production on his short film Raceland, a story of two men in rural Louisiana who rekindle their childhood friendship and explore how to express their love for one another. The film will tackle themes of masculinity and expectations put on men and their relationships, especially in the rural parts of this country. Click here to find out how to contribute to Raceland.
