The GLAAD Wrap: ‘Rocketman’ in theaters; ‘Trinkets’ trailer; new music from Taylor Bennett, Sleater-Kinney, Kim Petras; and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) The Elton John musical biopic Rocketman comes out in theaters nationwide today. The film follows the life of the legendary gay singer from childhood to fame, and focuses on his musical partnership with songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. Rocketman infuses John’s music with his story, and shows his romantic relationships with other men as well as his personal journey and road to sobriety. Click here for tickets!

2) Romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe comes out on Netflix today. Directed by out filmmaker Nahnatchka Khan, the movie follows childhood sweethearts Marcus and Sasha who are reconnecting after 15 years. The film also includes Sasha’s best friend Veronica, a lesbian who is pregnant. Always Be My Maybe is streaming on Netflix now!

3) The first clip has been released on Deadline for the upcoming film Bit, starring Nicole Maines as Laurel, a small town girl who falls in with a group of vampires in Los Angeles. Maines notably plays Dreamer on Supergirl, the first transgender superhero on television. In her role in Bit, she must decide whether or not to become a vampire. The film premiered this week at the Inside Out film festival in Toronto. Watch the clip here.

4) It was announced this week that out singer and Culture Club member Boy George will be the next singer to receive the biopic treatment. MGM will produce the film, which follows the singer from his working class upbringing to becoming a star through Culture Club. In further film news, Gravitas Ventures announced on Tuesday that they will be releasing horror film The Nightmare Gallery on demand in the U.S. The film stars Buffy’s Amber Benson as an anthropology professor who discovers occult artifacts that may threaten “her career, her wife, and her sanity.” The film will be available on demand June 19.

5) Showtime announced that it has picked up Work in Progress, a comedy co-created by and starring out comedian Abby McEnany. She stars as a fat, queer woman whose misfortune and despair unexpectedly lead her to a vibrantly transformative relationship. The show is executive produced by Lilly Wachowski and also stars Theo Germaine, an up and coming actor who is trans.

6) A trailer has been released for Netflix’s upcoming series Trinkets, starring out actress Brianna Hildebrand and non-binary actor Quintessa Swindell. The show follows three teenage shoplifters and the drama that accompanies them, and the trailer shows that there will be queer romances involved on-screen. Trinkets will be released on Netflix June 14. In other Netflix news, a premiere date for the third and final season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones has been announced. The show, along with lesbian character Jeri Hogarth, will be returning on June 14 as well. A date has also been given for the next season of GLOW, which will be released on August 9. 

7) On Thursday, MTV announced the cast for the upcoming eighth season of Are You The One?, which for the first time includes an entirely bisexual+ cast. The show will follow the 16 contestants in Hawaii, hoping to find love as well as the cash prize of one million dollars. This season, there are no gender limitations on who can match up. It premieres June 26 on MTV. Click here to see the cast!

8) Out bisexual artist Taylor Bennett released his third EP The American Reject on Tuesday. Bennett told Billboard “The American Reject showcases my views on systematic segregation through my eyes as an openly bisexual African American from Chicago Illinois… I’m sure everyone in this country at one point has felt unwanted, unwelcome or REJECTED, The American Reject is here to show us once again how great we can all be when you BE YOURSELF.” Listen to the EP below.

9) Out singer Miley Cyrus released a new EP today, entitled She is Coming. The six-track EP, containing features from RuPaul, Ghostface Killah, and Swae Lee, is her first new music since 2017’s Younger Now. Listen to the album here. 

10) Rock group Sleater-Kinney has released a new single, “Hurry On Home,” produced by out singer St. Vincent, along with a music video directed by Miranda July. The band, which includes bisexual members Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein, also announced a tour starting this fall. Find out more here and watch the music video below.

11) Kim Petras released a new song, “Do Me,” and lyric video on Thursday. Stream the track here and check out her tour dates here. Out singer Mathew V released a new song “Flashback” as well as an accompanying music video. In the song, he shares his experience as a survivor of sexual violence, and he hopes to use the song to start a conversation and let other survivors know that they are not alone. 12) Web series The Feels announced that they will be back for a third season on June 1, and release an episode each week of Pride Month. The show follows Charlie, a lonely bi guy just trying to figure out what to do with all of these feelings. In Season 3, more characters will be introduced, including genderqueer S, trans femme Nina, and masculine-of-center Lenny. Check for new episodes here starting tomorrow and watch the trailer below.

13) Theater of Terror: Revenge of the Queers is a currently funding collection of queer horror comics from all LGBTQ artists. Containing 250 pages from 33 artists, the books is framed as a horror show hosted by drag queen Peaches Christ in the Castro Theater, telling spooky stories.
