The GLAAD Wrap: New ‘Pose’ clips, trailers for ‘Mapplethorpe,’ ‘The Bold Type,’ and more!

Every week, the GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend!

1. The trailer for the Robert Mapplethorpe biopic film has been released. Starring Matt Smith, the film will dive into the controversial life of Mapplethorpe, whose photography often centered on gay men. Mapplethorpe is remembered as one of the most iconic queer artists of the ‘70s and ‘80s. He tragically died of AIDS complications at the age of 42, and his work has never hit the big screen. 2.The 2017 YA novel, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, has just been optioned by out director and producer Greg Berlanti for Berlanti Productions. The novel follows Monty, a bisexual teen, along with his friend Percy and his sister Felicity as they go on a grand tour of Europe. It also delves into Monty’s feelings for Percy, and the book follows their relationship as it grows throughout their travels. Berlanti is currently looking for a showrunner to helm the project.

3.Voltage Pictures has just announced a list of people who will be joining their ensemble cast for the punk-rock pic, Her Smell. Out bisexual actresses Cara Delevingne and Amber Heard have been included in this list. The film follows punk-rocker Becky, who deals with her own internal struggles, and eventually takes a rising female band under her wing.

4. Two new clips have been released for Ryan Murphy and Steven Canal’s new show, Pose. The short videos focus on Elektra, the house mother played by trans actress, Dominique Jackson. The show has been monumental already for featuring the largest cast of transgender series regulars to date. Pose will hit TV screens on June 3. 5. A new trailer for season two of The Bold Type has just been released. In it, the three main girls are getting together again to battle new challenges at their jobs, while also navigating the challenges of adulthood. Nikohl Boosheri has also been upgraded to series regular, which means that fans will get to see more of the Adena and Kat love story.  Check out the trailer below, and tune in when the show returns on June 12. In other television news, a trailer for season five of TV Land’s show Younger has been released, which shows footage of a new romance for lesbian character Maggie. Season five beings June 5.

6. Netflix has just dropped the first trailer for Tig Notaro’s new comedy special, Tig Notaro Happy to be Here. The full special will be released on May 22! Watch her trailer below.  The first trailer has also been released for the BBC One and Amazon drama, A Very English Scandal. The clip shows Hugh Grant as Jeremy Thorpe, a British politician who is tried for conspiring to murder his ex-lover, Norman Scott, played by out actor Ben Whishaw. The series does not have a release date yet, but will be airing soon.

7. NBC has just greenlit Michael Shur’s new comedy, Abby’s. The multi-camera comedy stars out bisexual actress Natalie Morales as the owner of Abby’s, an unlicensed backyard bar whose patrons are so close, they have become a little family. Morales is best known for her role on Parks and Recreation. Currently you can find her on Santa Clarita Diet streaming on Netflix. In other queer television news, Wynonna Earp and Killjoys both have had their return dates announced! Season three of both of these shows will return on July 20! Until then, check out the video below of the favorite couple, Waverly and Nicole.

8. Out gay actor Josh Thomas has just been given a pilot order by Freeform for his new show, Everything’s Gonna be Okay. The show will follow Nicholas (Thomas), a typical 25-year-old who still lives at home with his father and his two teenage sisters, one of which has autism. When their dad becomes terminally ill, Nicholas must deal with, not only the bad news, but also the realization that he must keep everything together. Thomas is best known for his critically acclaimed series, Please Like Me, which is available to watch in its entirety on Hulu. 

9. The 11th Annual Television Academy Honors has announced the seven recipients of their awards, which honor programs that “leveraged the power of television to inspire social change.” These recipients include GLAAD Media Award recipient Andi Mack as well LGBTQ-inclusive shows One Day at a Time, and 13 Reasons Why. The awards will be hosted by Dana Delaney, and will take place on May 31 in Hollywood.

10. Out singer Sam Smith has released a new music video for his popular track, “Pray”, this time a remix featuring rapper Logic. In other music news, the new song “Playinwitme” by KYLE and featuring Kehlani, just got its own music video. The video features a 90’s themed dating game show, with Kehlani as one of the contestants, competing to win a date with a woman. Check out the video below!

11. Feeling Seen is a documentary that specifically addresses how queer women are affected by the lack of representation on television or in movies. Television and movies do have the power to change hearts and minds, and to move away from inaccurate stereotypes about queer women. Attached to this project already is Adrienne Wilkinson (Xena: Warrior Princess), Isabella Gomez (One Day at a Time), Beth Malone (Fun Home), and many more.
