The GLAAD Wrap: 'Margarita with a Straw' opens, 'Looking: The Movie' sets date, and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) The Indian film Margarita with a Straw opens today in select theaters and will expand to iTunes, Wolfe Video, and other On Demand services June 14. The film follows Laila, who has cerebral palsy, as she moves from India to New York with her mother to go to college. Once she moves to the city, she finds herself falling for Khanum, a Pakistani-born girl who happens to be blind. Check out the trailer below.

2) Out actress Ellen Page has been cast in the upcoming film The Third Wave about a zombie-infected world where those who have been cured are shunned by the larger society. Page is also set to produce the film which will begin filming in Ireland later this year. The Handmaiden, a South Korean film which premiered at Cannes this week, has sold out worldwide with distribution deals in over 175 territories. The film is now the most widely distributed Korean film in history, Amazon Studios owns the U.S. rights and plans to premiere the movie in September with an as-yet unnamed theatrical partner. In other movie news, Wanda Sykes has been cast in the Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn-starring pic Mother/Daughter.

3) Looking: The Movie has finally gotten a premiere date: Saturday, July 23 on HBO. The two-hour film will serve as a final wrap up to the series which ran for two short seasons on HBO and followed a group of three gay friends trying to make it in San Francisco. Looking: The Movie sees Patrick returning to the city after almost a year away and he must face the damaged relationships he left behind as well as choose what is really important to him.

4) The Laverne Cox-starring legal drama Doubt has been ordered to series at CBS after being passed on last year. The show follows the team of defense lawyers at a boutique firm as one of them begins to fall for a client who may or may not be guilty of a horrible crime. In other TV news, out actor Wentworth Miller has gone from being a regular on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow to instead being a regular character in the larger Greg Berlanti-run universe of DC Comics shows including Legends and The Flash. Miller will also star in the upcoming FOX event series Prison Break which reunites the cast of the show which aired from 2005-09.

5) Sia has announced her first North American tour in over five years, “Nostalgic for the Present.” The tour kicks off in September with tickets on sale now. Troye Sivan has also announced a new tour this fall which will take the singer across the U.S. and Canada with a portion of proceeds benefitting The Ally Coalition, tickets for the Suburbia Tour are on sale now.

6) Actress and producer Crystal Chappell has launched a crowdfunding campaign to produce a fifth and final season of the Emmy Award-winning web series Venice The Series. The series was created in 2009 as a continuation of the story of Chappell’s character Olivia from the daytime series Guiding Light and her romance with arch enemy Natalia.
