The GLAAD Wrap: ‘Deadpool 2’ in theaters, new trailer for the ‘Sense8’ finale and more!
Every week, the GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend!
1. Superhero film Deadpool 2 opens in theaters today. The sequel to the blockbuster R-rated film, continues to follow the titular Deadpool, and the ragtag group that surrounds him. One of the characters from the first film, an X-men tem member Negasonic Teenage Warhead, shows up again in the second film, as well as her girlfriend fellow X-men member Yukio. Two women superheroes declaring that they are a couple is a big step forward for blockbuster superhero films. Read more about the impact of their story here and check out Deadpool 2 in theaters!
2. The Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody has released its first teaser trailer. The film will follow Mercury through his life as one of the most beloved rock stars in history, as well as a queer icon. Played by Rami Malek, the film will follow Mercury’s music, time with Queen, and his relationships with men and women. Check out the trailer below, and look out for the film when it’s released on November 2.
3. Netflix announced a new upcoming political comedy First Ladies starrring Jennifer Aniston as the fist female president and out comedian Tig Notaro as her wife. The film was co-written by Notoro and Stephanie Allyne, out writer and actress who is also married to Notaro. This is not Netflix’s first collaboration with Notaro, as they are putting out her Netflix special Happy to Be Here on May 22.
4. Reese Witherspoon and out journalist Glenn Greenwald just announced a new documentary they are producing of out lesbian tennis star Martina Navratilova. The film will cover her life winning over 30 tennis titles, and especially focus on her activism for LGBTQ rights dating back decades. Another documentary about LGBTQ athletes, Alone in the Game, was just announced, that will follow iconic LGBTQ athletes and the challenenges they face in the sports world. It will air on Audience Network on Tuesday June 28, and the powerful trailer is below.
5. The trailer for the Sense8 finale was released on Thursday. The finale will be feature film length and follow the sensates fighting to rescue one of their own to protect their future. This GLAAD Media Award-winning sci-fi series was notable for their inclusion of queer and trans characters around the world, and telling their stories with nuance and heart. Created by trans filmmakers Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the show’s impact will live on after this finale. The first two seasons are available to watch on Netflix, and don’t miss the Sense8 finale on June 8th.
6. The Charmed reboot has officially earned a series order from The CW for the 2018-2019 series line-up. The new series will center on three sisters living in a college town who discover they are three extremely powerful witches. One of these sisters, Mel, is described as “a passionate, outspoken activist” who also happens to be a lesbian. The first trailer for Charmed is available to watch below, and will premiere this fall on The CW.
7. AMC’s futuristic series Humans has just dropped its first season three trailer. In this upcoming season, the Synths have started their revolution, with queer Synth Niska taking an active role. Check out the trailer here, and look out for the season when it premieres on June 5. Also premiering in June, is the final six-episode run of Nashville, which CMT just released a sneak peek for. The final episodes will wrap up the story of gay country singer Will among others.
8. Queen Sugar, the critically acclaimed series from the OWN network, has just released a trailer for their next season. In it, we catch up with all the characters, include the bisexual writer Nova. Season three will have a two night premiere on May 29 and 30. Check out the trailer below! A trailer was also released for season four of Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which continues to follow the misadventures of the titular Kimmy and her out gay roommate Titus. 9. NBC has picked up Brooklyn Nine-Nine, just one day after Fox cancelled the series. Brooklyn Nine-Nine recently received a GLAAD Media Award for featuring an inclusive ensemble including Captain Holt, a black gay man and the leader of the precinct, as well as Rosa Diaz, a bisexual Latina played by out bi actress Stephanie Beatriz. The show will continue on NBC and will pick up midseason. In other good news, CBS has renewed the procedural drama series Instinct for a second season. The series stars on Alan Cumming as a gay former CIA operative who is lured back to his old life. The series has made history as the first broadcast drama with a gay lead.
10. Years & Years has released a new song and video, “If You’re Over Me.” This is the third song that has been released off of their sophomore album, Palo Santo out July 6. Featuring out lead singer Olly Alexander, the video show him in a queer futuristic world that continues from their last single “Sanctify,” Check out the music video below!
11. In other music news, queer singer King Princess has released an official music video for her single, “Talia.” The video is a queer love song with a twist and will be featured on her recently announced debut EP to be released on June 15. Also releasing new music is out pansexual singer Christine and the Queens, who just released a new single “Girlfriend,” her first since her debut album. Listen to and download the single here!
12. Tan France, the fashion expert on Netflix’s hit Queer Eye has nabbed a book deal for a memoir. As Western television’s first out gay Muslim, France’s memoir will combine humor, compassion, and his sense of style. The memoir is set to be released spring, 2019. Until then, keep watching season one of Queer Eye, streaming now on Netflix!
13. A new web series titled The T is currently looking for funding! The series focuses on two best friends, Jo, a white trans woman, and Carter, a queer black man, as they navigate their lives together in the city of Chicago. The series is created by Bea Cordelia and Daniel Kyri, who both write, produce, direct, and star in the production. Click here to learn more about the series, and see how you can help!
