The GLAAD Wrap: Critics' Choice Awards nominations, 'Couple-ish,' and more

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) The Critics’ Choice Awards nominations have been announced, this is the first year that the show has combined the honors for film and TV. Carol earned nine nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress for Cate Blanchett, Best Supporting Actress for Rooney Mara, and Best Director for Todd Haynes. The Danish Girl received five nominations, including Best Actor for Eddie Redmayne, and Lily Tomlin is nominated in Best Actress in a Comedy for Grandma. In TV, Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent) is nominated in Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) in Best Actress in a Drama Series, and Marisa Tomei (Empire) and B.D. Wong (Mr. Robot) are nominated in Best Guest Actor/Actress in a Drama Series. Andre Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Mel Rodriguez (Getting On) picked up nominations in Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and out actress Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story: Hotel) is nominated in Best Supporting Actress in a Movie Made for Television or Limited Series. LGBT-inclusive series Jane The Virgin, Master of None, and Transparent are up Best Comedy Series, with Empire, Mr. Robot, Penny Dreadful, and UnREAL nominated in Best Drama Series. Ted Allen and Jane Lynch picked up nominations in Best Reality Show Host. The Critics’ Choice Awards take place January 17 in Santa Monica and are set to air live on A&E, Lifetime, and LMN.

2) Out actress and comedian Margaret Cho is set to star in Highland, a comedy in development at Amazon. It will star Cho as a version of herself who, after court-ordered rehab, has to move in with her family who now run a pot dispensary. In other TV news, TNT has renewed LGBT-inclusive dramas Major Crimes and Murder in the First for new seasons, while Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris (NBC) and The Awesomes (Hulu) have been cancelled.

3) Netflix has acquired the global rights to the upcoming Freeform (formerly ABC Family) series Shadowhunters and will air the series as an original series globally a day after the U.S. premiere. The show is based on the Mortal Instruments novels which follow a girl who learns that she is a Shadowhunter, a human-angel hybrid who hunts demons. As she gets drawn into the world of hunting, she meets closeted Shadowhunter Alec and bisexual high warlock Magnus. Shadowhunters premieres on Freeform January 12 and then on Netflix the following day with subsequent episodes releasing weekly.

4) Web series Couple-ish has debuted after a successful crowdfunding campaign. It stars Carmilla actors Kaitlyn Alexander and Sharon Belle as platonic roommates pretending to be a couple in order for one of them to stay in the country. Alexander plays Dee, who identifies as non-binary and pansexual, and Belle plays Rachel, a lesbian Londoner who is desperate to stay in Toronto. Watch the first episode below!

5) Elton John has released a live video performance of “Wonderful Crazy Night,” the title track from his upcoming album. The album will be released on February 5. Watch the video below!

6) Sia has released a new track “Cheap Thrills” from her upcoming album THIS IS ACTING. The album hits shelves January 29, but fans can pre-order now and receive instant downloads of “Cheap Thrills” and three other tracks.

7) Beth Ditto, the out singer of Gossip, is releasing an eponymous plus-size clothing line. Ditto announced the launch of the collection with a T-shirt designed in collaboration with designer friend Jean Paul Gaultier. The full collection will be available in February.

8) The new short film Me and Marcy has launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover filming costs. The short follows Brit, a young woman who has been struggling with her identity, who deals with stress through occasional fits of kleptomania. After spending the night with a woman, she steals a photo album from the 1970s full of photos of a lesbian couple.
