The GLAAD Wrap: ‘Booksmart,’ ‘Killing Eve’ trailers, Lilly Singh on late night, ‘The Read’ coming to Fuse and more!
Every week, the GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend!
1) The trailer for the Olivia Wilde-directed feature Booksmart dropped on Monday, along with the film’s rave reviews from its premiere at SXSW. Booksmart tells the story of two straight-A high school best friends, one of whom is a lesbian, and their quest to party and break free on their last day of high school. It’s a coming-of-age tale for the modern day. Watch the trailer below.
2) A trailer has been released for the upcoming drama Tell it to the Bees, starring out bi actress Anna Paquin as a doctor who begins a romance with a mother and beekeeper played by Holliday Grainger. This 1950s-set queer romance will be available in select theaters and on demand beginning May 3.
3) The Wild Nights with Emily trailer was released last week. The film explores the life and story of iconic poet Emily Dickinson, deliving into an unexplored side of the reclusive writer, including her relationship with her brother’s wife, Susan. The film will hit theaters in limited release on April 12 before rolling out to additional cities. Watch the trailer below.
4) A new trailer has been released for the second season of BBC America’s acclaimed drama Killing Eve, a month ahead of its premiere on April 7. The trailer show’s Eve’s continued search for Villanelle, as well as her being questioned on her exact feelings for and obsession with the other woman. Watch the trailer below.
5) Popular YouTube star Lilly Singh will be replacing Carson Daly as the host of the NBC 1:35 am talk show slot. The new show A Little Late with Lilly Singh will begin in September. Singh came out as bisexual on Instagram at the end of February, and this show will bring the voice of a queer woman of color to late night.
6) Out queer and non-binary actor Bex Taylor-Klaus has been cast as a co-lead in the upcoming FOX pilot Deputy. Their character, Deputy Breanna Bishop, is described as the smartly dressed, sarcastic, “quietly badass” driver in charge of newly appointed Sheriff Hollister’s security detail. In other casting news, USA’s The Sinner will return for season three starring out actor Matt Bomer. The new season will return to the upstate New York town of Dorchester, where the first season was set. Bomer will play Jamie, an upstanding citizen and expectant father.
7) CBS All Access’ upcoming comedic drama Why Women Kill has cast Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Taylor, a bisexual lawyer in an open marriage, and Alexandra Daddario as Jade, a woman sleeping with Taylor who ends up getting more involved in Taylor and her husband’s lives than she planned. The show as a whole will look at women in three different eras and how they react to infidelity.
8) Popular podcast The Read, hosted by out commentators Kid Fury and Crissle West, has spawned a new variety/talk show coming to the Fuse network for a first season of ten half-hour episodes. The show has accumulated over 85 million listens and discusses pop culture from a queer Black perspective, while also covering current issues and highlighting the signature humor of the hosts. Fury is also developing an as-yet-untitled HBO dark comedy series about Greg, “a 20-something sarcastic gay Black man navigating adulthood and responsibility in New York City while struggling to wrap his head around his undiagnosed clinical depression.” Lena Waithe is executive producing. West recently appeared on an episode of Drunk History where she told the story of Marsha P. Johnson and the Stonewall riots in the episode “Bar Fights” which was nominated at the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
9) Trans singer Mila Jam recently released a new music video for her song “Twilight Zone.” The song highlights how dating straight men as a trans woman can feel like an alternate universe. The video also stars models Isis King and Arisce Wanzer who are also trans. Watch the video for “Twilight Zone” below. In other music news, lesbian singer Melissa Etheridge released a video for her single “Wild and Lonely,” off of her upcoming album The Medicine Show, which will be released April 12. Watch the video here. It was also announced this week that Etheridge will headline San Diego Pride this year.
10) Country singer Cameron Hawthorn came out in his new music video for his song “Dancing in the Living Room.” The video draws on the intimacy of romantic partners dancing in the comfort of their own home. It features couples in all stages of a relationship, finally leading to Hawthorn dancing with his partner. Watch the video below.
11) Steppenwolf Theater Company has announced its cast list for Ms. Blakk for President, co-written by Moonlight’s out co-writer Tarell Alvin McCraney. In addition to writing, McCraney will also star as Ms. Joan Jett Blakk, who was America’s first Black draq queen presidential candidate in Chicago in 1992. Performances will run May 23 – July 14 with the official opening set as June 3.
12) Wooden Mirror is crowdfunding to launch an animated series that challenges gender roles and explores the affects on young adults of accepting gendered stereotypes. To learn more about the project, click here.
