The GLAAD Wrap: ‘Bombshell’ in theaters; Critics’ Choice Award nominees; new music from Kesha and Troye Sivan; and more!
Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) The buzzed-about film Bombshell opens in theaters this weekend. The movie follows the women of Fox News speaking out against harassment from Roger Ailes. Though several of the characters are real life figures, there are also new fictional additions including lesbian character Jess Carr played by out actress Kate McKinnon, and Margot Robbie’s Kayla Popsisil. Bombshell will play in limited theaters this weekend and open everywhere on December 20.
2) HBO Documentaries has acquired the rights to Welcome to Chechnya, the new documentary from out filmmaker David France. The film follows a group of activists fighting against the anti-LGBTQ violence and repression in Chechnya. Welcome to Chechnya will debut at Sundance this January and air on HBO in June of 2020. In more film news, out actor Jonathan Groff has been cast in the The Matrix 4, the anticipated sequel from Lana Wachowski. Groff joins Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jaida Pinkett Smith and Neil Patrick Harris in the cast.

3) A trailer was released for In The Heights, the film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical from Lin Manuel-Miranda. Actress Daphne Rubin-Vega and Miranda confirmed that characters Daniela (Vega) and Carla (out actress Stephanie Beatriz) are a couple in the film. Watch the trailer below. A new trailer has been released for upcoming comedy Like a Boss, featuring out actor Billy Porter. The film stars Rose Byrne and Tiffany Haddish and will be in theaters on January 10. 4) Michael Chabon’s acclaimed novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay will be adapted into a limited series at Showtime. The story follows two Jewish cousins over the course of several years, serving as instrumental in the creation of the comic book industry. The novel also explores the relationship between lead character Sammy and another man.
5) Quibi has new project The Andy Cohen Diaries will chronicle the life of the out host and GLAAD Media Award honoree through animated episodes. Quibi has also picked up a remake of MTV’s ‘90s dating show Singled Out, hosted by out stars Keke Palmer and Joel Kim Booster. The updated version of the show has the message that “anyone and everyone can find love no matter their sexual preference.”
6) Kesha has released a new single and music video “Resentment,” featuring Brian Wilson, Sturgill Simpson, and out singer Wrabel. The song will be on her upcoming album High Road, which is available to pre-order here. Listen to “Resentment” here and watch the music video below.
7) Troye Sivan is featured on the latest track from singer Allie X, “Love Me Wrong.” The song is about the divide between family when they don’t accept their children for who they are. Watch the music video below. Out singer Jessie Paege has released a new song and video for “Phantom,” a single which addresses anxiety. Watch the video here.
8) Out singer Beccs has released a queer Christmas song “Before This Christmas Ends.” The song and music video are a romance between Beccs and another woman. Watch the video below. Singer Max released anew single and video “Checklist” with beauty influencer Patrick Starrr starring in the video. Watch it here.
9) The nominees for the 2020 Critics Choice Awards were unveiled on Sunday, and the list includes several LGBTQ-inclusive movies, television shows, and talent. Highlights include Booksmart, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Pose, David Makes Man, One Day at a Time, Schitt’s Creek, Years and Years, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, BoJack Horsman, Billy Porter, Mj Rodriguez, Asia Kate Dillon, Daniel Levy, Nico Santos, Andrew Scott, Russell Tovey, and Wanda Sykes. 10) Documentary And They Were Loved is currently funding to finish production. The film follows black and brown young queer men in the South, and their individual stories of trauma, triumph and love. The documentary shows an underreported section of the queer community by telling the story of men of color in Texas. Click here to support the film.
