RuPaul’s Scripted Netflix Series ‘AJ and The Queen’ Gets an Official Trailer: WATCH

Netflix has released an official trailer for AJ and The Queen, the upcoming hourlong scripted comedy series set to debut on January 10 starring RuPaul and co-written by RuPaul and Michael Patrick King.

The show also stars 22 drag queens from past seasons of Drag Race, EW reports. They include, Valentina, Mayhem Miller, Bianca Del Rio, Eureka O’Hara, Victoria “Porkchop” Parker, Alexis Mateo, Manila Luzon, Vanessa “Miss Vanjie” Mateo, Jinkx Monsoon, Katya, Jaymes Mansfield, Chad Michaels, Mariah Balenciaga, Kennedy Davenport, Jade Jolie, Ongina, Latrice Royale, Monique Heart, Ginger Minj, Trinity The Tuck, Jujubee, and Pandora Boxx.

The show’s synopsis: “Robert Lee (RuPaul), better known as the drag queen Ruby Red, has big dreams of opening his very own drag club. After years of performing in clubs all across the country, he has scrimped and saved and is one signed lease away from turning his dreams into a reality until he realizes he’s been swindled by a charismatic grifter (Josh Segarra) and his eye-patch wearing partner-in-crime, Lady Danger (Tia Carrere). With his heart broken and money stolen, Robert has no choice but to pick up the pieces and start over, and a cross country Ruby Red roadshow provides the perfect opportunity to do just that. But when AJ (Izzy G.), a scrappy, streetwise 10-year-old escaping a difficult home life, stows away in Robert’s rundown RV, the consummate performer suddenly finds himself in a new set of shoes: de facto parent. Fabulously mismatched yet perfectly paired, AJ and Ruby must find a way to navigate through tough times as they learn a few tricks from one another and roll on to brighter days.”

Trudeau, Macron, Johnson, Princess Anne Overheard Gossiping About Trump in Viral Video: WATCH

A video published to social media by Canadian Broadcast Company appears to show NATO leaders – Justin Trudeau, Emmanuel Macron, and Boris Johnson among them – gossiping about Donald Trump at a Buckingham Palace reception. Princess Anne was also present.

.@JustinTrudeau, @EmmanuelMacron, @BorisJohnson and other VIPs shared a few words at a Buckingham Palace reception Tuesday. No one mentions @realDonaldTrump by name, but they seem to be discussing his lengthy impromptu press conferences from earlier in the day. (Video: Host Pool) pic.twitter.com/dVgj48rpOP

In the clip, Johnson asks Macron, “Is that why you were late?”

Trudeau interjects: “He was late because he takes a 40-minute press conference off the top.”

After some inaudible dialogue from Macron, who had a tense press conference with Trump earlier in the day, Trudeau adds, “You just watched his team’s jaws drop to the floor.”

Morning Joe broke down the clip. Said Mika Brzezinski: “It’s pretty clear when you watch it, it is obvious they’re talking about him. They’re mocking him, and they have very little respect for him at all, if any.”

Elizabeth Warren Holds Back Tears in Emotional Exchange with Young Voter: WATCH

Elizabeth Warren shared an emotional exchange she had with a young voter in Marion, Iowa in a short video posted to social media on Monday.

Asked the young woman: “I was wondering if there was ever a time in your life where somebody you really looked up to maybe didn’t accept you as much? And how you dealt with that?”

Replied Warren, before embracing the woman: “Yeah. My mother and I had very different views of how to build a future. She wanted me to marry well, and I really tried, and it just didn’t work out. And there came a day when I had to call her and say, this is over. I can’t make it work. And I heard the disappointment in her voice. I knew how she felt about it. But I also knew it was the right thing to do. And sometimes you just gotta do what’s right inside, and hope that maybe the rest of the world will come around to it. And maybe they will and maybe they won’t. But the truth is, you’ve gotta take care of yourself first and do this.”

I was asked at a town hall “if there was ever a time in your life where somebody you really looked up to maybe didn’t accept you as much?” Here’s my answer: pic.twitter.com/ariYPwvWQr

Indiana School Board Member Says ‘Cry Me a River’ When Asked to Address LGBTQ Suicides: WATCH

Indiana School Board Member Says ‘Cry Me a River’ When Asked to Address LGBTQ Suicides: WATCH

A group of LGBTQ activists from Tri-State Alliance who had signed up to speak to the Evansville, Indiana school board meeting were shut down by board members as they began to address the needs of transgender students, the Illinois Eagle reports.

After the group addressed board member Ann Ennis about transgender suicides, Ennis told them there was no support on the board to protect transgender students.

When one of the activists said, “that was so transphobic” about Ennis’s remarks, Ennis walked from the room pantomiming a violin, and saying “cry me a river.”

Meet TV’s black, gay superhero: Hooded Justice

Meet TV’s black, gay superhero: Hooded Justice

Captain Metropolis & Hooded Justice

History–or in this case, alternate history–marches on, at least on HBO. The network’s acclaimed series Watchmen just had a watershed moment through the introduction of Hooded Justice/Will Reeves, an openly gay African American superhero.

For the uninformed, Watchmen follows the moral quandaries of an alternate timeline, one in which superheroes emerged in real life in the 1930s and 40s. Rather than having a positive effect on society, however, their existence wreaked havoc on the world, especially after the creation of the God-like being Dr. Manhattan. By 2019, the Tulsa, Oklahoma police department consists entirely of costumed officers, including Sister Night (played by Regina King) who stumbles onto another sinister plot involving Dr. Manhattan, a conspiracy of silence, and an alt-right militia group.

Sunday’s episode, titled “This Extraordinary Being,” (spoiler alert!) explores the history of Sister Night’s grandfather, revealed to be the first African-American police officer in Tulsa, Will Reeves (played by Jovan Adepo). Persecuted by his fellow officers and the Tulsa community, he dons the costumed identity Hooded Justice, avenging crime around the city. Hooded Justice also attracts the interest of another costumed hero, Captain Metropolis (Jake McDorman). When the two meet, they begin a torrid affair…and the show makes its first major misstep.

We should mention here that the identity and backstory of Hooded Justice deviate from that of the source novel, written by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. In the original text, the Hooded Justice-Captain Metropolis relationship is one of the bright spots in a gritty, lonely story. Theirs is a pure love affair, and the subsequent murder of Hooded Justice sends Captain Metropolis into a downward spiral. He begins to abuse alcohol, has a nervous breakdown, and ends up institutionalized.

The alteration of the Hooded Justice identity into that of Will Reeves fits well with the TV series Watchmen‘s meditations on racism in the United States, and the show also deserves applause for having the chutzpah to explore a same-sex superhero relationship. That said, making what was a loving relationship in the source material into a fetishized, coercive one is not the best way to introduce a groundbreaking, African-American gay superhero. The TV series portrays Captain Metropolis as someone who isn’t devoted to fighting crime so much as a gay man into costumed roleplay. Furthermore, his treatment of Hooded Justice doesn’t just devalue their relationship, it makes it downright abusive.

Watchmen deserves credit for addressing issues of racism, and for integrating a terrific character like Will Reeves into its story. But the show also falls back on the trope of hypersexualized, sociopathic queer characters–the kind that functioned as villains for decades in film and television. Call it provocative, call it timely, call it powerful…but don’t call it progress.

CNN reports: “The heckling lasted for about one minute, according to CNN’s Kate Bennett, who was in the room. But the audience remained raucous, audibly speaking over her remarks throughout her brief speech to the B’More Youth Summit. … She was again loudly booed, and also cheered, as she departed the stage at the conclusion of her speech. This is the first time the first lady has been publicly booed at a solo event, though the Trump administration has had strained relations with the city of Baltimore.”

Roy Moore: We Must Return to a ‘Moral’ Time with Criminalized Gay Sex, No Same-Sex Marriage, Drag Queen Story Hours, or Transgender People

“We have got to go back to what we did back in the sixties and seventies back to a moral basis,” said U.S. Senate and former Alabama Chief Justice candidate Roy Moore to the Huntsville Republican Men’s Breakfast group this week.

“Abortion was not legal when I went to Vietnam. It was passed later,” Moore continued. “We had abortion laws in our country and our state. We did not have same sex marriage. We did not have transgender rights. Sodomy was illegal. These things were just not around when my classmates and I went to West Point and Vietnam.”

“We have drag queens teaching kindergarten children in this state and this community….in Huntsville in Mobile they taught kids and they dress them up in drag,” he continued, during a tirade against a number of other topics. “Where does this come from? Gender identity is being taught in California to young kids and parents have no choice but to let their kids be taught that.”

In other words, Roy Moore hasn’t changed.
