30 Animals, Including Entire Ape House, Die in Tragic German Zoo Fire Sparked by New Year’s Sky Lanterns: VIDEO
A tragic zoo fire sparked by sky lanterns let go to celebrate the new year killed at least 30 animals at the Krefeld Zoo in Germany.
The AP reports: “The zoo near the Dutch border said its entire ape house burned down and more than 30 animals — including five orangutans, two gorillas, a chimpanzee and several monkeys — were killed, as well as fruit bats and birds. Only two chimpanzees were able to be rescued from the flames by firefighters. They suffered burns but are in stable condition, zoo director Wolfgang Dressen said. … The zoo said the Gorilla Garden, which is near its devastated Ape House, didn’t go up in flames and that gorilla Kidogo and six other members of his family are alive.”
Said zoo director Wolfgang Dressen to the media: “It’s close to a miracle that Bally, a 40-year-old female chimpanzee, and Limbo, a younger male, survived this inferno. We have to seriously work through the mourning process. This is an unfathomable tragedy.”

‘Tis the season. The Christmas spirit was extinguished for a brief time at a shopping mall in Sydney where a dozen people were injured and five hospitalized after a mob of people reaching for free gifts inside of balloons crushed each other as the balloons dropped. A Santa standing behind a display in an adjacent Christmas village was also knocked down in the melee.

D.C. Police Hunting Man for Anti-Gay Attack with Machete: VIDEO
Washington D.C. police are searching for a machete-wielding assailant who chased two men into the lobby of a building late last week.
NBC Washington reports: “The victims told police they were walking south in the 1200 block of North Capitol Street NW at about 11 p.m. Friday when one of the two men said to the other, “f— you,” a police report says. The suspect, who was walking north, heard the comment and assumed it was directed toward him, the report says. The machete-wielding man chased the two men into the lobby of Tyler House, near New York Avenue, and made “stabbing motions” at them, the report and a statement from police says. … According to the police report, the crime is being investigated as an assault with a dangerous weapon with anti-gay motivation.”
