Victory! The Hallmark Channel will reinstate LGBTQ-inclusive advertisements after GLAAD and the LGBTQ community spoke out

Victory! The Hallmark Channel will reinstate LGBTQ-inclusive advertisements after GLAAD and the LGBTQ community spoke out

On Sunday, GLAAD responded to The Hallmark Channel’s decision to reinstate TV ads featuring a same-sex couple after facing pressure from GLAAD and the LGBTQ community.

GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis, said in a statement: “The Hallmark Channel’s decision to correct its mistake sends an important message to LGBTQ people and represents a major loss for fringe organizations, like One Million Moms, whose sole purpose is to hurt families like mine. LGBTQ people are, and will continue to be, a part of advertisements and family programming and that will never change. GLAAD exists to hold brands like The Hallmark Channel accountable when they make discriminatory decisions and to proactively ensure families of all kinds are represented in fair and accurate ways.” GLAAD was also on CNN immediately after Hallmark Channel reversed its decision.

On Thursday, the Hallmark Channel pulled TV ads featuring brides kissing from its airwaves after deeming the content “controversial.” A series of six ads for the wedding planning website Zola first appeared on the Hallmark Channel on December 2nd. The decision to pull the ads featuring two women kissing came after the network faced pressure from the anti-LGBTQ hate group One Million Moms.

GLAAD created a petition urging Hallmark Channel to reinstate the ads which garnered thousands of signatures, spoke out in the press including on NBC Nightly News, and also had conversations with The Hallmark Channel. GLAAD also worked with media to expose the One Million Moms and their continued agenda to dehumanize LGBTQ people and spread hatred and misinformation about our community.

In a press release on Sunday, the Hallmark Channel announced that it will reverse its decision and reinstate the TV ads featuring a same-sex couple. Mike Perry, CEO of Hallmark, said in a statement: “Earlier this week, a decision was made at Crown Media Family Networks to remove commercials featuring a same-sex couple. The Crown Media team has been agonizing over this decision as we’ve seen the hurt it has unintentionally caused. Said simply, they believe this was the wrong decision. Our mission is rooted in helping all people connect, celebrate traditions, and be inspired to capture meaningful moments in their lives. Anything that detracts for this purpose is not who we are. As the CEO of Hallmark, I am sorry for the hurt and disappointment this has caused.”

Perry continued: “Hallmark is, and always has been, committed to diversity and inclusion – both in our workplace as well as the products and experiences we create. It is never Hallmark’s intention to be divisive or generate controversy. We are an inclusive company and have a track record to prove it. We have LGBTQ greeting cards and feature LGBTQ couples in commercials…Hallmark will be working with GLAAD to better represent the LGBTQ community across our portfolio of brands. The Hallmark Channel will be reaching out to Zola to reestablish our partnership and reinstate the commercials.”

After the advertisements were initially pulled from air, GLAAD released the following statement from President & CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis: “The Hallmark Channel’s decision to remove LGBTQ families in such a blatant way is discriminatory and especially hypocritical coming from a network that claims to present family programming and also recently stated they are ‘open’ to LGBTQ holiday movies. As so many other TV and cable networks showcase, LGBTQ families are part of family programming. Advertisers on The Hallmark Channel should see this news and question whether they want to be associated with a network that chooses to bow to fringe anti-LGBTQ activist groups, which solely exist to harm LGBTQ families.”

LGBTQ-inclusive advertising has become increasingly popular from brands across industries, and plays an outsized role in enabling LGBTQ families to see themselves reflected positively in the media. Recently, Pantene, in partnership with GLAAD and the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, partnered to create a video series entitled “Going Home for the Holidays“, which seeks to bring awareness to the unique challenges that many LGBTQ people face during the holiday season.

Hallmark’s decision comes during a year where LGBTQ representation on television has hit its pinnacle: GLAAD’s 2019 Where We Are on TV report found that 10.2% of series regular characters on television were LGBTQ, a record high.

Homophobic group ‘One Million Moms’ selects its latest enemy… Hallmark movies

Homophobic group ‘One Million Moms’ selects its latest enemy… Hallmark movies

Candice Cameron Bure in the Hallmark movie ‘Christmas Town’

And it today’s “Seriously?” file…

Muckraking homophobes and misleadingly titled grassroots group One Million Moms has selected the Hallmark Channel as its next target.  The reason: a hint that the TV network might consider adding LGBTQ storylines to its TV movies.

The controversy began with hopeful remarks from CEO of Crown Media Family Networks Bill Abbott. “In terms of broadening out the demographic, it’s something we’re always thinking about,” Abbott told The Hollywood Reporter. “Always considering and we’ll continue to make the movies where the best scripts are delivered to us and what we think have the most potential.” Abbot made the comments in addressing a lack of diversity in Hallmark TV movie characters. Of 24 new telefilms debuting this season, only five have black leads. In the same interview, Abbott commented that the network would also consider films based around LGBTQ leads as well.

Related: One Million Moms calls for ‘Toy Story 4’ boycott. The reason is priceless.

Now, according to the New York Daily News, the idea that Hallmark might produce more films without a straight, white lead (the horror!) has sent One Million Moms into a tailspin. “Please sign our petition asking Hallmark to do what is right and reject airing movies and commercials with LGBT content!” the group posted on its website. NBC reports that, at the time of this writing, the group had only collected 16,000 signatures. Fundamentalist Catholic website LifeSite also joined in the outrage, collecting 40,000 signatures under the auspice of preventing  “promotion of homosexuality and transgenderism.”

Hallmark Holiday movies, though popular, also have a reputation for sentimentality and silly plotting, often revolving around implausible romance or magical events. In addition to enduring criticism for a lack of ethnic and sexual diversity, Hallmark has also come under fire for attempts at integrating Jewish characters into its movies.

Same-sex couple win Denmark’s Dancing With The Stars

Same-sex couple win Denmark’s Dancing With The Stars

A post shared by Silasholst (@silasholst) on

A same-sex dance couple have made history by winning Denmark’s TV show, Vild med Dans. The show is its version of Dancing With The Stars.

The pair comprise of gay actor Jakob Fauerby, 42, and professional dancer Silas Holst, 36. They have consistently wowed audiences and judges with their routines, securing the highest score in four of the show’s previous eight episodes.

Fauerby says that when he was invited to take part, he requested to be partnered with another man.

Once producers agreed to the request, Holst, who had taken a break from the show for the past five years, returned to dance with Fauerby.

Although the pair’s participation has been met with much praise, there have been some detractors. Fauerby has appeared on several news shows to defend his participation as one half of the first same-sex couple in the show’s 16-year history.

“We are a small country of only 5.6 million people, and every Friday more than a million people tune in to watch the show and many more watch it on-demand afterward,” LGBTQ Nation reports Fauerby saying.

“There are very few shows that everyone sees, and this is one of them, so there are a lot of feelings connected to it.”

He says that criticism died down after the first couple of shows and the novelty of seeing two men dance together wore off.

“What happened after the first two shows is that people saw weren’t going to have anal sex on stage.

“It is feelings. It is sensuality. But it is not sexuality. It’s just two people dancing.”

When they danced their paso doble at Friday’s finale, one of the judges, Marianne Eihilt cheered and said, “I am so proud to live in a country where two men can make a final,” reports Politiken.

Afterward, Fauebry, a father to two children, took to Instagram to post about his joy and pride at winning.

“It’s totally crazy and absolutely amazing. Thank you so much to all of you for your wonderful messages and great support over the last 12 weeks.

“I am so proud that my daughter, her big brother, and all other little boys and girls can go out into the world and love them the way they want and dance with whomever they want.”

He called his dance partner, Host, “the bravest man” and thanked him for partnering with him: “It was worth it. Now we have to party! With all my heart – thank you very much.”

Holst, in return, posted: “I am proud! Proud of our hard work was rewarded, but most importantly proud to share a country with all of you who have dared to open your mind and look at something new with open eyes.

“That you saw through both sex and sexuality and only saw two people dancing. It fills my heart with love and my eyes with tears! Thank you so much for all your love and voices! It has been touching and absolutely amazing to feel your support!”

Last year, Italy’s version of Dancing With The Stars, Ballando con le Stelle, featured a gay celebrity partnered with a male professional dancer. The duo reached the competition’s grand final and came third.

The Israeli version of the show has featured a same-sex female competing couple and the Austrian version has featured a male competing couple. Earlier this year, Courtney Act danced with a male partner in the Australian version of the show.

There has yet to be a same-sex competing pairing on the US’s Dancing With The Stars. Nyle DiMarco did participate in a brief, same-sex routine in a January 2016 episode of the show. He went on to win the series with his female dance partner, Peta Murgatroyd.

UK TV show Strictly Come Dancing – forerunner to Dancing With The Stars in the US and other countries – featured its first same-sex dance routine in early November. The dancers were professionals, not celebrity contestants.

A report in Britain’s Sunday Times yesterday suggested UK show producers are seeking a drag queen – possibly a former Drag Race contestant – to take part in the next series.

Dolly Sits Down with Robin Roberts, ‘AHS 1984’ Wraps and More TV This Week

Dolly Sits Down with Robin Roberts, ‘AHS 1984’ Wraps and More TV This Week

Check out our weekly guide to TV this week, and make sure you’re catching the big premieres, crucial episodes and the stuff you won’t admit you watch when no one’s looking.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is a sort of ouroboros of meta snark, but if you’re into the hyper self-aware teen rom-com genre, this should be a high-energy, musical thrill. The series premieres on Disney+ Tuesday.

I don’t know about you, but I am LOVING this Dolly Parton media renaissance we’re living in. In addition to a fantastic podcast and an upcoming Netflix series, you can celebrate one of the greatest artists of all time with Dolly Parton: Here She Comes Again!, Tuesday at 10 p.m. Eastern on ABC. The tribute features a sit-down with Robin Roberts.

If you’re still following this season of American Horror Story, first off, maybe you should talk to someone? But, if you’re committed to seeing this trash fire through, 1984 wraps Wednesday at 10 p.m. Eastern on FX.

Look, I don’t “get” Harry Styles, but who am I to yuck someone else’s yum? Get your fill of the former One Direction heartthrob when he helms NBC’s Saturday Night Live as host and musical guest Saturday at 11:30 p.m. Eastern.

The new season of The Crown drops Sunday on Netflix, and we truly don’t deserve that much Olivia Colman. And Helena Bonham Carter? We aren’t worthy!

What are you watching this week on TV?
