Taylor Swift has tweeted her reaction to one of her fans choosing her music to publicly come out at his university.

Last week we reported on how Reid Arthur and a group of his friends took part in a Lip Sync battle on stage at the Quaker-founded, George Fox University in Oregon.

The friends chose to do a mash-up of the Taylor Swift songs “You Need To Calm Down” and “…Ready For It”.

During the routine, Arthur took center stage and his friends grabbed the sleeves of his sequined jacket. They pull on them to reveal a white top with rainbow ribbons hanging from the sleeves – to the delight of the audience who give a huge cheer.

Afterward, one of those on stage, Allie Schluchter (@AllieSchluchter) tweeted: “Tonight I helped one of my favorite people come out, and the love and joy that surrounded this moment is going to stick with me for the rest of my life. I’m so proud of you @reidoburrito95.”

On Friday night, Swift tweeted a response to the performance.

“This just made me SO emotional. @reidoburrito95 I can’t tell you how honored I am that my song has been even a small part in your journey. You did the brave thing and stood up for your truth.”

Needless to say, Arthur, a huge Swift fan, was blown away. He tweeted.

“This woman. My Queen. My Icon. The woman who’s lyrics I have screamed at the top of my lungs. Who’s songs have walked me through the hardest time of my life. TAYLOR ALISON SWIFT. MOTHER OF MEREDITH, OLIVIA, AND BENJAMIN, KNOWS MY NAME. TWEETED ME. I CANNOT CALM DOWN!!!!!”

He went on to tweet: “HOW AM I EVER SUPPOSED TO DO MY HOMEWORK EVER AGAIN.”

For those not clued up on Swift fandom, Meredith, Olivia, and Benjamin are the names of Taylor Swift’s cats.

Swift went on to have something of a memorable weekend of her own. On Sunday she scooped six American Music Awards at the annual ceremony at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. This brings her grand tally of AMAs to 29, beating Michael Jackson’s previous record of 24 AMAs.

Reid Arthur, a senior theater major at George Fox University, came out as gay this week at his school’s annual lip-sync battle. He had performed once before to a Taylor Swift song, but never like this.

Teen Vogue reports: “In a five-minute performance at the college that has denounced same-sex marriage, Arthur first lip-synchs to Swift’s ‘…Ready for It?,’ then transitions to ‘You Need to Calm Down.’ When the lyrics, ”Cause shade never made anybody less gay’ play, Arthur’s backup dancers rip off his coat to reveal a white T-shirt with rainbow strings hanging from its sleeves, meant to tell his classmates that he’s gay. The crowd gave Arthur a standing ovation and he won first place, which was $500 he says he plans to donate to an LGBTQ organization.”

A student has come out in the most public way possible at his Christian university. Reid Arthur attends Oregon’s George Fox University. He and his friends took part in a university lip-sync competition over the weekend.

The friends chose to do a mash-up of Taylor Swift’s songs “You Need To Calm Down” and “…Ready For It”.

Swift’s video for “You Need To Calm Down” was a celebration of her LGBTQ fans and a call for equality. Swift has been a longterm ally of the community and has donated over $100,000 to the Tennessee Equality Project, as well as encouraging her fans to sign petitions demanding equal rights.

Re-tweeting a video of the moment, one of those involved, Allie Schluchter (@AllieSchluchter) said: “Tonight I helped one of my favorite people come out, and the love and joy that surrounded this moment is going to stick with me for the rest of my life. I’m so proud of you @reidoburrito95.”
