Anti-LGBTQ U.S. Activists Organize Conference in Ghana

Anti-LGBTQ U.S. Activists Organize Conference in Ghana

Post submitted by HRC Global Senior Manager Taylor N. T. Brown

This week, the World Congress of Families will hold a regional conference in Accra, Ghana, where U.S. anti-LGBTQ activists will advance their dangerous vision of the so-called “natural family.” As a part of these efforts, the World Congress of Families plans to advocate for adoption of public policies supporting so-called “conversion therapy” and an understanding of LGBTQ people as “deviant,” while attacking sex education and women’s rights in Ghana. Through this work, the World Congress of Families continues its campaign to export hate and thwart the work of local advocates to end violence and discrimation against LGBTQ people across West Africa.

The World Congress of Families is an anti-LGBTQ organization based in the U.S. with strong ties to the religious right. The organization, designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group, promotes a disturbing and radically distorted depiction of LGBTQ people. It has a long history of exporting its anti-LGBTQ narrative to many parts of Africa, often by framing LGBTQ people and the protection of their human rights as somehow foreign and un-African, a fundamentally inaccurate characterization.

In 2015, HRC published a report exposing the World Congress of Families past anti-LGBTQ efforts over the years. In Russia, the World Congress of Families pushed adoption of the so called “Gay Propaganda” Law and promoted similar laws in Lithuania and other countries. Across Africa, the World Congress of Families enabled and promoted legislation to further criminalize LGBTQ people, including in Nigeria and Uganda.

At this week’s conference in Ghana, some of the World Congress of Families’ most prominent U.S. figures will take the stage, including:

  • Sharon Slater, President of Family Watch International: Slater has spread the horrific depiction of LGBTQ people as pre-disposed to committing crimes against children. In 2012, she called on activists in Nigeria to oppose efforts by international institutions to support the decriminalization of LGBTQ people. In 2019, Slater characterized sex education as an attack on family values.
  • Brian Brown, President of the World Congress of Families: Brown has long organized against LGBTQ communities, promoted harmful laws and emboldened other hate groups and extremists. Recently, Brown boasted about his close relationship with autocratic Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and met with activists in Tbilisi, Georgia, to praise their confrontations with LGBTQ people.

HRC condemns efforts by the World Congress of Families to further endanger LGBTQ people, women and others in Ghana and throughout the world. We urge allies to help us shine a spotlight on the group’s hateful agenda and hold the World Congress of Families accountable by sharing news on social media about the group’s harmful messages and amplifying the positive work of local LGBTQ communities and their allies.

WATCH: Queer non-binary makeup artist gives lesbian activist makeover for LGBTQ+ History Month

Carolyn Weathers has fought on the front lines of the LGBTQ rights movement since the 1970s, helping to get homosexuality removed from the DSM’s list of mental illnesses, working tirelessly with the Los Angeles Gay Liberation Front, creating one of the earliest lesbian-feminist publishing houses in Southern California, and so much more.

She helped pave the way for queer people to live with the unprecedented freedoms we now enjoy, so when the It Gets Better Project decided to pair an LGBTQ activist with a makeup artist for a video project, Weathers was a perfect choice.

J is a non-binary queer makeup artist who gave Weathers a new look while hearing about her incredible work, and it’s really never a bad time to learn some vital queer history or a few sensible makeup pointers.

Woman Who Survived Horrific 2012 Execution-Style Shooting in Which Girlfriend Was Killed Appears on ‘The View’ — WATCH

Longtime readers of the site will remember the story of then 18-year-old Kristene Chapa, and her girlfriend 19-year-old Mollie Olgin, a teenage lesbian couple in South Texas, who were shot execution style by a man it took two years to apprehend. Though she lay wounded in deep brambles for eight hours after the attack, Chapa miraculously survived. Olgin did not.

View co-host Sunny Hostin is revisiting Chapa’s story on her new series Truth About Murder, and welcomed Chapa and her mother back to the show to reflect on the attack and her life since.

Although the attack was not deemed a hate crime, Hostin said she wanted to revisit Chapa’s story because she doesn’t believe the media covers enough the attacks that happen to the LGBTQ+ community.

Partnerships in Innovative Advocacy: Engaging People of Faith as Allies for Equality

This month, HRC Global rolled out the second in our series of “Engaging Allies” resources and capacity-building workshops, titled “Engaging People of Faith as Allies for Equality.” Through this series, HRC is convening advocates for workshops, consultations and ideas sharing centered on working with people of faith as allies in their countries.

This resource and its associated workshops are geared toward LGBTQ advocates around the world who understand the importance of religion in shaping and driving societal attitudes towards LGBTQ people. It provides the tools and skills to engage with people of faith – both clergy and laity – across all religions and faith traditions.

The resource distills HRC’s 20-year history in the faith space into five key ways to engage people of faith: identifying LGBTQ people of faith and allies; connecting with them and connecting them to each other; providing tools and resources for them to be allies; providing people of faith with effective messaging to create change within their faith traditions and the public sphere; and creating opportunities for them to engage in advocacy as allies.

These resources and workshops are part of HRC Foundation’s Global Partnerships in Innovative Advocacy program, which seeks to help strengthen the global equality movement through more effective advocacy, campaigning, organizing and outreach.

ER nurse suspended after going on psychotic rant against gay and trans people wearing tampons

ER nurse suspended after going on psychotic rant against gay and trans people wearing tampons

An emergency room nurse from TriHealth hospital in Cincinatti, Ohio has been suspended from her job after having a transphobic, homophobic meltdown on Facebook over tampons.

Cindy Carter took to Facebook last week to voice her outrage over Procter & Gamble going gender neutral by removing the female “Venus” symbol from its packaging on its ‘Always’ menstrual products.

““F*ck ‘Always.’ This country has gone to complete sh*t,” Carter raged. “Women have periods, men don’t.”

“Why do certain applications ask for LEGAL SEX … you’re either male or female. There’s no f*cking in between. Jesus people – get your heads on straight. Grab a mirror – it’s easy. You either have a d*ck or you don’t.”

She continued, “I swear, these f*cking c*ck sucking homos think that they deserve everything. And the confused woman are just as bad. Men need to be men. Women need to be women. Stop the stupid assman buns’ and man you buns up to do some hard labor.”

When gay city councilman Chris Seelbach saw the rant, he took a screenshot and shared it on Facebook, along with the caption: “Cindy Carter is a nurse at TriHealth. As an LGBTQ+ person, I don’t feel comfortable using TriHealth’s services until I know a person who thinks I’m a ‘fucking cock sucking homo’ would ever treat me. Until TriHealth terminates the employment of Cindy Carter, I will not be using their services. #BoycottTriHealth

It didn’t take long for TriHealth to snap into action. The hospital almost immediately placed Carter on administrative leave and launched an investigation into the matter.

Local news station WCPO reports:

The nurse at the center of the controversy was suspended for her own safety and that of others, according to an official TriHealth statement. She did not respond to requests for comment. An investigation is ongoing. In an internal memo, TriHealth wrote that every patient is entitled to reliable and compassionate care.

Yesterday, Seelback took to Facebook to thank TriHealth for stepping up, tweeting: “Thanks to @TriHealth for putting Cindy Carter on administrative leave. That’s a good first step. No one who thinks I am a ‘f*cking c*ck sucking homo’ and that transgender people don’t exist should be treating patients.”

HRC President to Congress: Anti-LGBTQ Housing Discrimination is “Morally Bankrupt”

HRC President to Congress: Anti-LGBTQ Housing Discrimination is “Morally Bankrupt”

Today, Alphonso David, the President of the HRC, testified in a hearing before the House Financial Services Committee’s Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee on anti-LGBTQ discrimination in housing and lending. The hearing also addressed the inhumane and unprecedented attacks on transgender people by HUD Secretary Ben Carson.

HRC President Alphonso David said:

No one should be turned away from an apartment, kicked out of their home, or sent back to the street simply because of who they are or whom they love. LGBTQ people and our families demand fair and equal access to housing opportunities. We want affordable homes, we want quality schools, and we want to feel safe when we lay our heads down at night. These are simple things, but without them the right to fully participate and contribute to our communities as equal members is simply out of reach. Discrimination continues to persist and, for an agency that purports to ensure housing for all, it is illogical and frankly morally bankrupt to harm those in our community who are often closest to the edges. Explicit, federal protections in statute are critical to end discrimination. That is why we need the Equality Act.

On any given day, as many as 10,000 LGBTQ young people do not have a safe place to sleep. In some U.S. cities, 30% of the homeless adult population is LGBTQ. The faces behind these numbers reflect our community’s most vulnerable—our youth, our transgender siblings, and people living with HIV. LGBTQ people face discrimination and rejection in every area of life– at school, at work, and at home. Distressingly, the weight of this discrimination falls disproportionately on the shoulders of LGBTQ people who are Black and Brown.

Last month, Ben Carson, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), made horrific anti-transgender comments at a closed meeting of agency personnel that shocked many staff members and compelled one to walk out during his remarks. Under the leadership of Donald Trump and Mike Pence, Carson’s agency has published potential changes that would severely undermine existing protections for transgender people.  If this proposed rule is published in its current form,  federally-funded emergency shelters would be empowered to  turn away transgender people who are homeless or displaced.
