Daters Find Midterm Voters More Attractive

New data from OkCupid shows that singles who vote in local and midterm elections get more Likes and Matches

Ahead of National Voter Registration Day on September 20th, OkCupid and Vote.org are teaming up to encourage young daters across the nation to register to vote and make their voices heard in this year’s midterm elections. Beginning in September and running through Election Day in November, OkCupid will be driving its users in the United States to Vote.org’s resources to help people register to vote, request an absentee ballot, and find their polling place.

About 9 in 10 (86%) of nearly 3 million daters on OkCupid in the United States are currently registered to vote — and singles are looking for people who participate in all elections. Last year, people who said they vote in midterm and local elections got 35% more Matches and 26% more Likes than those who only vote in the general election. They also had 52% more conversations on our dating app when compared to people who said they don’t vote.

Only on OkCupid can you match on what matters through in-app questions. This year, we’ve found that politics is the biggest conversation starter and dealbreaker. Our matching questions related to politics and voting have been answered more than 150 million times over the years. So we’ve added brand-new in-app matching questions ahead of the 2022 midterm elections to help our daters navigate conversations around the upcoming election and biggest political issues:

Right now, almost 8 in 10 people on OkCupid (65% of Gen Z, 76% of Millennials and 83% of Gen X respondents) plan to vote in the 2022 midterm elections, held on Tuesday, November 8th. And singles who plan to vote in the midterms are reaping the benefits. They are getting 31% more Matches, having 21% more conversations, and receiving 14% more Likes.

“We know our young daters are politically engaged. A majority of Gen Z (79%) and Millennial (86%) singles on OkCupid are registered to vote, and Millennials are most likely to say they couldn’t date someone who doesn’t vote.” said Michael Kaye, head of global communications at OkCupid. “We’re excited to partner with Vote.org to help increase voter turnout and reach millions of young voters on OkCupid.”

“Voter registration and engagement among Generation Z and Millennials is increasing across the country,” said Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org. “We’re proud to partner with OkCupid, which reaches millions of engaged young people seeking connection with others. Just as OkCupid works to remove barriers from finding love, Vote.org removes the hurdles associated with voting. Daters on OkCupid are planning for their future, and so is Vote.org. Our democracy thrives when we connect and join together. Now, we’re excited to work with OkCupid to energize more young people as they make their plan to vote on or before November 8.”

Vote.org is the nation’s largest voter registration and activation platform in the country. Are you Vote Ready? Go to Vote.org to register to vote, verify your registration, request an absentee ballot, find your polling location, sign up for election reminders and more. Vote.org is your one-stop shop to prepare to vote and make your voice heard.

NEWS: 2019 is deadliest year on record for transgender Americans, 27 trans people killed this year

ICYMI: Anti-LGBTQ Activists Used Anti-Trans Rhetoric To Sway Voters in Key 2019 Political Elections

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, tonight released the following response to the inclusion of a LGBTQ question during the sixth presidential primary debate hosted by POLITICO and PBS NewsHour in Los Angeles. Tonight’s question reversed what was an alarming trend in the 2020 election cycle where zero questions on LGBTQ-specific issues were asked on the debate stage, and when anti-LGBTQ activists plan to use transgender Americans as a wedge issue in the upcoming 2020 elections.

“With anti-LGBTQ activists planning an onslaught of false ads against LGBTQ Americans next year, it is important now more than ever for the candidates to proactively speak out against anti-LGBTQ discrimination, and tonight’s debate did just that,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “LGBTQ voters need to know that they have a true ally with the next president — and tonight’s question about violence against transgender Americans rightfully brought to light an epidemic that continues to cripple the LGBTQ community, with 2019 being named the deadliest year on record for the trans community.”

The previous absence of LGBTQ-specific debate questions occurred as anti-LGBTQ activists plan to use the transgender community as a dividing issue in the upcoming 2020 elections. As GLAAD pointed out in its post-2019 election report, anti-LGBTQ activists used the media — both traditional and digital media — to air anti-trans ads in states like Kentucky and Louisiana, which attacked and put the safety of transgender Americans in jeopardy — all in the hopes of galvanizing their base to win political elections.

The effort by anti-LGBTQ activists has been executed in a top-down method starting with President Trump and his administration. Since taking office in 2017, President Trump has made 132 anti-LGBTQ attacks — with a majority of his attacks coming focusing solely on the transgender community. This includes Trump’s ban on transgender servicemembers from serving in the nation’s armed forces and preventing trans Americans from getting access to affordable health care. The full list of anti-LGBTQ attacks can be found on GLAAD’s Trump Accountability Project

Taking Care of Everyone in our Community

Taking Care of Everyone in our Community

Taking Care of Everyone in our Community

At Tinder, we’re always working to make it easier to connect with new people. And, as I begin my third year as CEO, I want to acknowledge that using our app hasn’t always been easy for everyone.

We strive to create a place where people everywhere can be who they are and love who they love. A few years ago, we made strides in the industry by expanding gender identities to be more inclusive for everyone on Tinder – and we are continuously making changes and improvements to help all members feel recognized and welcomed when connecting on our platform. With this in mind, I want to address the transgender community and share the steps we’ve taken toward inclusivity across our entire business – from improving our product, to training our people, to using our platform to tell real stories from members of the community.

Improving our product experience

Today, you can add the term that best reflects your gender identity on Tinder by using our feature, More Genders. And while many successful matches have been made, and surely more minds opened, our trans members have been very vocal about: the banning of our transgender members, especially transgender women.

When developing our More Genders feature: we decided not to give Tinder members the option to filter out profiles of trans people. We stand by that decision. We will always do what we can to foster an inclusive community on Tinder. However, it came with some very disappointing, unforeseen consequences. Trans people continue to be reported at higher rates by cisgender members simply for being who they are. Although our intention was to be more inclusive, we understand many members of the trans community have felt the opposite. When we recently started offering support via Twitter, this became especially clear; and, we’ve taken immediate steps toward improving our processes:

  • Leveraging our support channels to directly engage with the community more quickly
  • Redirecting these types of reports to our escalations team
  • Deploying new in-app warnings to provide more feedback about which Guidelines people may be violating – rather than banning profiles

Since implementing these changes, we’ve been able to meaningfully increase the number of trans people who remain on Tinder despite unwarranted reports. I’m encouraged by the progress we’ve made, and am dedicated to continuing our assessment and refinement of Tinder’s reporting structure. In the meantime, we encourage people to make use of the More Genders feature. As a reminder, when you choose to self-identify on Tinder, it does not mean that you share this information to other members unless you choose to. As always, if you believe that your account has been banned due to reports about your gender identity, please contact us at [email protected].

Educating our team

We are working to better integrate inclusivity into every part of Tinder. This starts with our own employees, and I’m happy to share that we’ve completed trainings with Speaking of Transgender for our leadership team and people managers. We will be implementing training for everyone across the company in 2020, as well.

Sharing more stories

Unfortunately, simply being a transgender person is still stigmatized in our society – and that can make dating difficult. We want to do our part to provide more trans representation and visibility by sharing stories of transgender people. We’re releasing new videos for our Tinder Inclusivity series from Swipe Life that explore what it means to identify as trans, and the dating experiences ( both good and bad) that trans people experience.

We are sincerely committed to making Tinder a place where all people feel welcome – and will update you as we continue to make improvements across our company and within our global community.

-Elie
