Raven-Symone slammed for saying she’d discriminate against someone with ‘ghetto’ name
Raven-Symone came under fire on Friday for saying she would discriminate against someone with a ‘ghetto’ name.
The former child star made her remarks during a conversation with her fellow co-hosts on The View about new study released in the Journal of Evolution and Human Behavior.
She said if she were an employer looking to make a hire, she would not consider any names that sounded too ethnic.
‘I’m not about to hire you if your name is Watermelondrea,’ she said. ‘It’s just not going to happen. I’m not going to hire you.’
When co-hosts challenged her remarks Symone asked: ‘Is that mean?’
The backlash quickly spread to social media.
YouTube superstar Tyler Oakley tweeted: ‘Please educate yourself.’
Fox Sports host Mike Hill wrote: ‘What if their name was Pam Smith and then [they] showed up at work looking like YOU, Raven?’
Last year, Symone caused an uproar when she said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that she does not consider herself to be African-American but simply American.
Although she is in a relationship with a woman, she has also refused to be called lesbian or bisexual preferring to be described as a human who loves humans.
