Project One America Engages with Community Around Lent and Easter Sunday

For 46 days, HRC’s Project One America has invited people of faith to join us marking the Lenten season. Since Ash Wednesday on February 10, faith leaders in Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama have been leading daily meditations, drawing us closer to God and one another in preparation for the day of the resurrection, Easter Sunday.

“The essence of the Easter story is this: life defeats death, peace is more powerful than war, love is greater than hatred and good will outlast evil,” said Bishop Yvette Flunder, a member of HRC Foundation’s Religion Council and Presiding Bishop of the Fellowship, a multi-denominational group of primarily African American Christian leaders and laity representing churches and faith-based organizations from the U.S., Africa, and Mexico.

“Foolish people think that killing the messenger will kill the message,” Flunder said. “They don’t understand the power of resurrection! May divine life spring forth out of the ashes of all of our struggles and renew us for the challenges to come!””

The resurrection of Jesus is both a reminder and celebration of life, yet people continue to suffer, including LGBT people in the South. We are working to end that suffering with our Project One America, the HRC Foundation’s comprehensive campaign to dramatically expand LGBT equality in the South through permanent campaigns in Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas. We are working for freedom and justice for all, and to ensure that all LGBT people are full members of society at home, at work, at church and in every community.

We can’t do it alone.  We need you. Won’t you join us?

It is important to note that the season of Lent is an observance of many Christian denominations and may not resonate with all readers. Through 40 Days of Conversation, HRC’s Religion and Faith team worked to amplify and honor the voices of LGBT-affirming faith leaders in many religious traditions.
