Powerful Gatorade Ad Marks Abby Wambach’s Retirement

In conjunction with Abby Wambach’s retirement from professional U.S. soccer, Gatorade released a powerful video honoring her and the sport she loved so much.

Wambach, who is openly lesbian, is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and vocal advocate for LGBT equality.

“Forget me,” Wambach said in the ad that was released today. “I want to leave a legacy where the ball keeps rolling forward. Where the next generation accomplishes things so great that I am no longer remembered.”

According to USA Today, Wambach played for the national team for 14 years and made and 184 goals. She plays her last professional game tonight.

Most recently, a video of Wambach kissing her wife after winning the World Cup this summer went viral.

“Abby Wambach is one of the greatest American soccer players to ever step on the field,” Gatorade explained. “Pushing the sport forward, while championing the fight for equal rights, her impact extends far beyond the field. Yet, as she faces retirement, her focus is solely on the next generation. Urging them to achieve things so great that she is all, but forgotten.”

Gatorade, which is owned by PepsiCo, received a 100 on HRC’s Corporate Equality Index (CEI), the national benchmarking tool on corporate policies and practices pertinent to LGBT employees.

HRC thanks Wambach for her leadership and congratulates her on a historic career.
