In this life, there are mysteries; phenomena we’ll never be able to fully grasp or understand. For example, we don’t know quite what it is we find so endearing about this photograph of Greg Louganis and Tom Daley.

Perhaps it’s something to do with the affectionate gaze in each other’s eyes, or maybe there’s something oddly ineffable in the subtext — one generation handing the proverbial Olympic torch down to another; something like that.

Anyway, once you take a look, and after you’re finished gutturally sobbing, perhaps you can explain why this image has somehow succeeded in awakening our craven brittle hearts, and made us feel something we suspect is akin to natural human emotion.
