Pay Back Your Waffle Fries – The Dru Project is Asking for Donations to Repent for Your Chick-Fil-A Indulgences
The Dru Project, a nonprofit LGBTQ advocacy organization that seeks to “spread love across the nation,” wants to give you a chance to turn your guilt over your Chick-Fil-A purchases into positive donations for LGBTQ youth. Information about how to donate and share your Chick-Fil-A confessions can be found in the post below:
The Dru Project was created in order to honor the life and legacy of activist Christopher Andrew Leinonen, who lost his life in the Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016. While at Seminole High School in 2002, Leinonen launched its first gay-straight alliance and received the Anne Frank Humanitarian Award for his efforts. The Dru Project aims to continue and honor Leinonen’s work by empowering LGBTQ youth through scholarships, and support in creating and maintaining gay-straight alliances. Since its founding, The Dru Project has raised over $30,000 in college scholarships, and the Chick-Fil-A reparations will contribute to these donations.
Recently, Chick-Fil-A was once again in the news for its homophobic practices. Last month, it was revealed that Chick-Fil-A’s charitable foundation had been donating to anti-gay charities such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Salvation Army, and more. In 2012, Chick-Fil-A CEO Dan Cathy argued against marriage equality, stating that the United States was: “inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and we say we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.” Cathy’s family charity, the WinShape Foundation, has also donated to a number of anti-LGBTQ charities, including Exodus International which promoted the very dangerous practice of conversion therapy until it was fortunately disbanded in 2013.
Though Chick-Fil-A’s consistently anti-LGBTQ practices have spurred sporadic protests and boycotts, they have not stopped the restaurant from immense success. In fact, Chick-Fil-A is now projected to become the third-largest restaurant chain in America, behind only McDonald’s and Starbucks, this year. Donations to The Dru Project, however small, in lieu of or along with purchases at Chick-Fil-A, will help to offset the millions Chick-Fil-A has donated to anti-LGBTQ causes. So next time you’re craving Chick-Fil-A, be sure to donate to LGBTQ advocacy organizations like The Dru Project and pay back your waffle fries in order to help LGBTQ youth.
