Paul O’Grady pays tribute after the death of his friend Cilla Black
Comedian and actor Paul O’Grady said he didn’t know Cilla Black was in danger of dying and found out while reading the morning news.
O’Grady, who is 60, told the Liverpool Echo he could not believe Black was dead. ‘Please tell me this isn’t true? We’ve been friends for nearly 20 years. She’s like my sister,’ he said.
‘We had a week together in Barbados at the beginning of the year and I saw her on my birthday.
‘I thought she was well. I can’t believe it to tell you the truth.’
The two television personalities were close friends. O’Grady says the only noticeable sign of illness was her hearing.
He added: ‘I kept telling her she’d outlive us all. She’s such a strong lady.
‘It was difficult because she couldn’t hear so it became texting but then we’d manage to get her.’
Cilla Black died in her home in Marbella, Spain.
She is thought to have died sometime during Saturday night. There is an autopsy underway but Spanish police have said: ‘Everything at this stage is pointing towards her death being the result of natural causes.’
Black rose to fame as a singer, during which time she released 14 albums. Later in her career she became a television personality, presenting popular shows like Surprise Surprise and Blind Date. Her life’s story was told in a recent drama film, Cilla, played by Sheridan Smith.
The popular star, whose real name is Priscilla White, told the Mirror in 2014 she thought death before 75 would be a good thing.
‘Seventy-five is a good age to go if things start to drop off,’ she said.
‘I don’t want to linger. I don’t want to be a burden on anybody. I know 75 is only four years away, but I take each day as I find it.’
