Some State Officials Are Still Refusing to Issue Marriage Licenses
Despite clear signals from the Supreme Court that it’s unconstitutional to withhold marriage licenses from gay and lesbian couples, officials in at least two states are continuing to enforce marriage bans.

South Carolina and Kansas are both covered by district court rulings that overturned marriage bans. In South Carolina’s case, the ruling was in a case that originated in neighboring Virginia; and for Kansas, the cases came from Utah and Oklahoma. Even though those cases referred to marriage bans in other states, the decisions apply broadly to other states in the same circuit.

The situation in both states is complicated. Initially, some Kansas officials instructed counties to issue licenses after the US Supreme Court upheld the lower court decisions overturning bans in Utah and Oklahoma. But then the Kansas Supreme Court put those orders on hold, pending a hearing on November 6.

Similarly, a few clerks issued licenses in South Carolina after the US Supreme Court decision. But then further marriages were put on hold, pending further briefs and possible oral argument sometime after next month.

Gay and lesbian couples are fighting back in both states, filing suits against state officials. With the intense focus that the latest Supreme Court decision has brought to marriage in conservative states, we’re likely to see a resolution in both states within the next few weeks, and marriage starting not long after.

Lance Horne Returns To New York's Birdland With 'Lance & The Ladies'

Lance Horne Returns To New York's Birdland With 'Lance & The Ladies'
Emmy Award-winning composer, songwriter and performer Lance Horne is returning to New York’s Birdland after a smash run earlier this year — just in time for his birthday.

Horne’s new show, “Lance & the Ladies,” will feature performances by Leslie Gore, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Julia Murney, Gabrielle Stravelli and Stephanie d’Abruzzo. The show comprises material featured on Horne’s 2011 album, “First Things Last,” as well as excerpts from his forthcoming Neil Gaiman opera collaboration, new songs and “plenty of surprises.”

“If you know me, you know I adore writing for and surrounding myself with amazing women,” Horne, who has written with Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters and served as Liza Minnelli’s musical director, said. “For my birthday, I’m starting a new series celebrating our connections and their brilliance.”

Horne, of course, is informed by his own experiences as a gay man, and his work has always featured performers relevant to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

In his early years, “a lot of people came down hard on me for doing work that was vocal, gay and theatrical,” he told The Huffington Post in March. These days, however, it “really tends to be all gay, all the time, and sometimes I feel like I’m in a ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ revival.”

In honor of his Oct. 20 performances, Horne shared three exclusive videos featuring Alan Cumming and Alice Ripley with The Huffington Post. Head here for more information on “Lance & The Ladies”

Videos are directed by Ned Stresen-Reuter.
