'Glee' Character Comes Out As A Trans Man In Latest Episode

'Glee' Character Comes Out As A Trans Man In Latest Episode
Warning: “Glee” spoilers!

“Glee” started its final season off with the much-anticipated “Frozen” cover, but its latest big storyline was even more powerful. During Friday’s episode, “Jagged Little Tapestry,” Coach Shannon Beiste, played by three-time Emmy nominee Dot Marie Jones, came out as a transgender man. In the episode, Beiste informs Sam and Sue (played respectively by Chord Overstreet and Jane Lynch) that he is taking time off to begin a medical transition.

On why this was the right time for the story arc, Jones told The Hollywood Reporter, “Like it or not, it’s real life. I think Fox is amazing for putting this on broadcast television.”

The “Glee” storyline comes at a time of slowly increasing representation of trans men and women in television. At last Sunday’s 2015 Golden Globes, “Transparent” actor Jeffrey Tambor, who plays a transgender woman on the show, won the award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, which he dedicated to the transgender community. “Transparent” series creator Jill Soloway dedicated the show’s win for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy to Leelah Alcorn, a trans teen who committed suicide in December.

Jones says that her character’s physical transformation is a “big transition” and will be seen around episode six. On why “Glee” is right to tell this story, the actress added, “We know it will make a difference.”

Andrew Rannells Relives Being Forced To Give A Handjob

Andrew Rannells Relives Being Forced To Give A Handjob

If you’re wondering if people are still giving handjobs, get ready for some peace of mind. Andrew Rannells stopped by Late Night With Seth Meyers Thursday to chat about his role as Hannah’s ex boyfriend/current gay bestie Elijah on HBO’s Girls. The actor who headlined the Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch last summer shared the challenges he faced when asked to perform his very first onscreen handjob. When he read the script, naturally his first thought was, “Who gives a handjob?” But being a professional actor, Rannells manned up and performed the task. He even learned that his scene partner actor hailed from his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. “He was like, ‘Do you think that the Omaha paper would write about this?’” Rannells said. “Local boys share hand job! I was like, ‘I guess we could try.’”

Watch Rannells discuss his hard work below.

Anti-Gay Pastor Hopes Jesus Will Gather Enough Signatures To Repeal LGBT Protections In Plano, Texas

Anti-Gay Pastor Hopes Jesus Will Gather Enough Signatures To Repeal LGBT Protections In Plano, Texas

Plano

Opponents of LGBT protections in Plano, Texas, must call upon the lord to gather enough signatures to repeal them and set pulpits aflame this weekend, according to an anti-gay pastor whose group is leading the effort.

The City Council in Plano — a conservative suburb of Dallas with a population of 270,000 — approved the Equal Rights Ordinance in 5-3 vote a last month. Opponents, led by the Texas Pastor Council, must gather 3,822 valid signatures to force the City Council to either repeal the ordinance or place it on the May ballot.

In an email Friday, Texas Pastor Council Executive Director Dave Welch wrote to members:

WElch.Dave“There will be ample time to continue to debate and discuss the numerous and serious problems with the Equal Rights Policy in detail – the only issue at hand is doing everything humanly possible while calling upon the Lord to secure enough valid signatures before Monday. … The pulpits must be aflame with God’s truth and righteousness in calling openly and strongly for every voter to be faithful to this basic duty of stewardship. The current count of signatures really does not matter as IT CANNOT BE TOO MANY. EVERY valid signature is important and if people can’t remember if they have already signed it, instruct them to sign it anyway and only the few duplicates will be disqualified. Better that than no signature.”

Last year, the city of Houston rejected a petition from Welch’s group aimed at repealing LGBT protections, saying it didn’t have enough valid signatures. The group responded by suing the city, and the case is set for trial beginning Tuesday. In court documents, attorneys for the city have accused Welch’s group of forgery and other dishonest signature-gathering tactics. But in his email Friday, Welch suggested they must do whatever it takes in Plano:

“Pulpits, PowerPoints, texts, tweets, Facebook, email broadcasts and even a recorded call to your church list from you are EACH an important component of a multiple contact approach to maximize results. Is the name of our Lord, His design of male, female, marriage and family, His moral laws as well as our basic freedoms and families’ well-being worth this effort? It is decision time. Remember, it is Mayor Harry LaRosiliere and the five city council members who railroaded this ordinance through with complete disrespect to the community and good government practices who ‘threw the first punch.’ LaRosiliere and the council declared that God either doesn’t exist or His word is false and that even basic biological facts are up for grabs. They assaulted the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God – not us.Our only question is whether we will allow the lie to stand or be responsible stewards and to do what is required of us to assure that His governing authority loaned to us and delegated by us to others is used for righteousness and justice – not deception and tyranny.”

Opponents of the Plano ordinance have launched a website and Facebook page to spread fear and misinformation, including graphics like the one above. Ironically, Prestonwood Baptist Church — the evangelical megachurch serving as ground zero for opposition to the ordinance — has a history of child sex abuse and coverups, recent media reports have noted.

Supporters of the ordinance have also begun to organize and prepare for a likely ballot fight. They’ve launched their own Facebook group, which has more than eight times as many followers as the opposition page. However, the ordinance also continues to draw criticism from the transgender community over its broad exemptions, including for schools, nonprofits and restrooms.

Dallas-based trans activist Nell Gaither wrote:

“If the problems with this are not called out, this sets a precedent for every other municipality in Texas. … This is not a Plano issue. This is a Texas issue, and more. If they get away with the lie that this is an LGBT equality policy it will set a dangerous precedent that will be very difficult to overcome for many, many years. And the worst part is that Equality Texas is now supporting it. Mainly to satisfy ‘their funders.’ They want a win to spread across the state. So this appears to be their model. How nice. Another Gay Inc. organization selling out the trans community in Plano, in Texas, and more.”

On Friday, gay activist and Iraq war veteran Sean Sala shot video as he approached people gathering signatures to repeal the ordinance in a Plano post office parking lot. In the video, Sala accurately informs people that repealing the ordinance would also undo local protections based on veteran’s status — talking one woman out of signing the petition.

A Look Back At Madonna’s Greatest Live TV Performances

A Look Back At Madonna’s Greatest Live TV Performances

It was announced this week that Madonna will be performing at the 57th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on February 8. The “Living for Love” singer is about to embark on a major media blitz to promote her thirteenth studio album Rebel Heart, due out on March 10.

No word yet on which song — or songs — our lady M will be performing, or if any other artists will appear on stage with her (Nicki Minaj, perhaps?), but we have a feeling that it’s going to be big.

We can hardly wait to see what tricks the Queen has up her sleeve!

In anticipation for Madonna’s upcoming performance, here’s s a roundup of some of her greatest live TV performances…

2006 Grammy Awards

Clad in a purple sequined leotard with matching high heels and lots of glittery bangle bracelets, Madonna looked smokin’ hot while singing “Hung Up” alongside the cartoon band the Gorillaz. (What ever happened to them anyway?) Seriously, there’s nothing we don’t love about this performance. The music. The choreography. The costumes. The lights. And, most importantly, the slow-motion dance break at the 5:30 mark. It’s beyond.

1995 Brit Awards

Bathed in white light and dressed in a flowing silk nightgown, Madonna looked like an angelic Greek goddess as she belted out the title track from her 1994 album Bedtime Stories whilst standing before two enormous fans that kept her platinum blonde hair blowing Heavenward for the entire four-and-a-half minutes.

1997 Academy Awards

Determined to prove that, despite what the critics claimed, she could actually sing, Madge took to the stage of the 1997 Academy Awards to perform the ballad “You Must Love Me” from her hit film Evita. And it worked. She proved herself. And we loved her.

1990 MTV Music Video Awards

Everyone always talks about Madonna’s performance at the 1894 MTV Music Video Awards when she writhed around on stage in a wedding dress cooing “Like A Virgin.” That performance was iconic, but, deep down, we’ve always preferred the spectacle she put on at the 1990 MTV Music Video Awards when she channeled her inner Marie Antoinette and lip-synced the song “Vogue.” (Yes, die-hards, she lip-synced. Look closely and you’ll see she doesn’t have a microphone anywhere.)

1985 Live Aid

When Madonna performed at the first Live Aid music event in 1985, she was big, but she wasn’t yet the pop cultural force to be reckoned with that she is today. This gem of a performance features Madge before she was, well, Madge and she still hadn’t quite shaken her youthful and ebullient club performer persona.

1995 American Music Awards

Our Lady M hit the stage with R&B crooner Babyface at the 1995 AMAs to serenade audiences with her mega-hit “Take A Bow.” The performance is noteworthy because it marks one of the few times she has ever performed the ballad live, despite it being one of the most successful singles of her career, spending seven weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

2012 Superbowl Halftime

Of course, we couldn’t forget to include Madonna’s epic 2012 Superbowl Halftime performance, during which our Queen, dressed like Cleopatra, sung a medley of some of her greatest hits, including “Open Your Heart,” “Like A Prayer,” “Vogue,” and “Music.”

Comedian Simon Amstell Shares His Well Lubricated Dream About Wet Dungeon Boys: VIDEO

Comedian Simon Amstell Shares His Well Lubricated Dream About Wet Dungeon Boys: VIDEO

Amstell

Out gay comedian Simon Amstell appeared on Conan O’Brien’s late night show this week and riffed on how he regrets not having had more sexual adventures before settling down in a relationship. However, the comedian notes that the type of adventures he craves are not ones he’s particularly well cut-out to handle. Nor are they situations he feels he has a lot to offer. An orgy, for instance: “My personality is not suited to an orgy. What I bring to a social setting is humor. That is not required at an orgy. No one wants to be sarcastically fellated.”

Amstell also shares a fantasy he had while on vacation in France with his boyfriend that caught him off-guard:

“Even though it’s perfect, even though I love [my boyfriend], I fall asleep next to him, I have a dream that I’m being seduced by this wet dungeon boy and not wet from water. Covered in lubricant. And I should have known it was a dream because it was too much lubricant.”

Watch as Amstell hilariously recounts his dream and how it almost ruined his vacation, AFTER THE JUMP…
