Tina Fey hopes gay men will always quote from Mean Girls at brunch

Tina Fey hopes gay men will always quote from Mean Girls at brunch

Nothing makes Tina Few happier than to know that plenty of gay men still enjoy quoting her 2004 movie Mean Girls over brunch.

It seems that lines like ‘Stop trying to make fetch happen!’ ‘Is butter a carb?’ and ‘Boo, you whore’ just don’t get old.

‘I hope that’s still going on,’ Fey tells The Advocate.

Then she jokes: ‘I have a really weird marketing point in my deal that I don’t get any money when it shows on TBS, but I do get money when it’s quoted at brunch.’

Fey wrote the script and had a supporting role in the movie about female high school social cliques that starred Linday Lohan. Rachel McAdams, Tina Fey, Lacey Chabert, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Franzese, Jonathan Bennett and Amanda Seyfried.

She did not anticipate it would become such a cult classic among gay men.

‘I didn’t, but Damian (Franzese), the gay character, was in every draft. Someone once asked me, “How come everyone’s sort of paired off at the end but we don’t see what happens to Damian?” I said, “Because it’s a movie about girls.” We should’ve made another movie about Damian.’

As for her own high school days, Fey has described that time as the ‘four-year-long pride parade’ that marched through her house.

She thinks she had so many gay and lesbian friends during that time becauseI’m certainly more open-minded to people’s differences.

‘it definitely gave me a wider swath of humor styles. I grew up so much in theater, so the gay community has always been a natural part of who I feel like I’m playing to. When you’re writing jokes, you’re always thinking of your friends.’

DVD: “The Stanford Prison Experiment,” “Steel,” “Trashology,” & More!

DVD: “The Stanford Prison Experiment,” “Steel,” “Trashology,” & More!

stanford-prison-experiment

Sleepers and under the radar fare dominate this week’s home entertainment highlights!

Students become the teachers in disturbing thriller-drama The Stanford Prison Experiment (above), a gay man struggles with mental illness while a sexy 18-year-old tries to help him in Steel, and trashy camp comedy rules in anthology flick Trashology.

Now for trailers and the details!

The Stanford Prison Experiments

($24.99 DVD; IFC)

Having previously tackled the screen’s first David Sedaris story adaptation. C.O.G., openly gay director Kyle Patrick Alvarez dramatizes a 1971 experiment in which a Stanford University psychology professor simulated a jail setting and cast 24 students – portrated by a cast of hip young actors including Ezra Miller, Tye Sheridan, and Kier Gilchrist – in prisoner and guard roles to see what happens. Let’s just say the experiment resulted in shocking and atrocious developments and behavior in the young folk… and the ones who orchestrated it. Triple-feature this with another pair of films inspired by the famed 1971 experiment, 2001 German import Das Experiment and 2010’s The Experiment with Adrien Brody. A Blu-ray version will follow this early DVD release in January.

Steel

($24.99 DVD; Breaking Glass Pictures)

Director Sven J. Matten and his co-writer Melissa Kajpust tackle mental illness in this drama about a gay TV journalist, Daniel, who is suddenly plunged into deep depression. Plagued by panic attacks, his life threatens to completely derail, but when he meets the beguiling 18-year-old Alexander at a club, romance suddenly injects itself into the equation. Can love – and some pretty hot sex scenes – conquer all? Extras include deleted scenes.

Trashology

($19.99 Blu-ray, $14.99 DVD; Slasher Video)

Likened to “John Waters meets Troma” plus Quentin Tarantino and Tales From The Crypt, this is campy, gleefully low-budget anthology fare. The framing device sees an adult college student discover a book containing stories about revenge, violence, and horror. In “The Vat,” a bible-thumper gets comeuppance from a couple of fed-up friends. In “Big Debbie” a large gal becomes sex slave for two men, which leads to a Pulp Fiction-esque death and the clumsy cover-up that follows. And “Inglorious Bitches” sees a pair of female vigilantes use a smartphone app to track down and extinguish the lives of sex offenders. Make a drinking game of it!

Davey Wavey’s New Underwear Line Features Trans and Gender Nonconforming Models: VIDEO

davey wavey underwear

Gay YouTuber Davey Wavey has launched a new line of underwear for his label DirtyFit, the campaign for which is modeled exclusively by transgender and gender nonconforming models.

The Cosmic collection is designed to celebrate “every body in the universe.” Says Davey,

“As a creator and as an artist, my success has been built through the support of the queer/ LGBT community where certain body types get put in the spotlight a lot more than others,” said DirtyFit Founder Davey Wavey. “While this campaign doesn’t level the paying field, it celebrates many different members of our community. I would like to use my platform to share their stories and widen the conversation.”

A new video features the models talking about their experience modeling for the first time. One model says, “As a person who is bodied like I am, it’s empowering because it makes people see that there’s no one standard but a multitude that are all beautiful in their own way.” Another model adds, “I don’t have to listen to what society says about me…I can be both masculine and feminine. Some days I don’t have to be either. I can just wake up and be human.”

Watch as the models strut their stuff, below:

Fact-Checking the Media on Charlie Sheen and HIV

Fact-Checking the Media on Charlie Sheen and HIV

Before Charlie Sheen revealed his HIV-positive status on the The Today Show with Matt Lauer, numerous online media sources began reporting on Sheen’s status and his personal life. Since many mainstream media sources do not typically report on HIV-related news, several publications have released stories with inaccurate and inflammatory statements, unknowingly stigmatizing people living with HIV.

Here is a compilation of reports from publications that got it wrong.

The Today Show: In regard to the likelyhood of HIV transmission with an undetectable viral load: “Are you referring to unprotected or protected sex?” said Matt Lauer. “I’m talking about protected sex,” said Charlie Sheen.

False. Although the use of protection may be the optimal scenario, this, unfortunately, was a missed opportunity to stress the importance of an undetectable viral load. Achieving an undetectable viral load reduces an HIV-positive person’s chance of transmitting the virus by 96 percent regardless of whether a condom is used or not. To date, there has never been one confirmed case of HIV transmission from someone with an undetectable viral load.

NBCnews.com: “…The AIDS virus lurks in the body and almost always builds back up in the blood if people stop taking the drugs that suppress them.”

False. There is not an AIDS virus, and this use of editorial creativity represents an example of the media attempting to make the story more dramatic and severe. HIV is a virus, and without medication, it can lead to the advanced stages of the virus. AIDS is a diagnosis.

National Enquirer: “The Charlie Sheen AIDS Cover-Up”

False. Charlie Sheen does not have AIDS to cover up. In fact, many doctors and activists believe that the term “AIDS” should no longer be used. HIV is a virus, and AIDS is a term used to describe the advanced stages of HIV. Now that treatment has advanced, there isn’t a need to differentiate advanced HIV with a specific diagnosis, and many believe the term only perpetuate outdated, stigmatic viewpoints. Moreover, no publication should be reporting on information that comes from the National Enquirer as fact.

Charlie Sheen on TMZ: “My blood is now HIV free.”

Could be sort true, sort of. After TMZ originally broke the news about Sheen’s scheduled interview, the source released a video with the headline, “Charlie Sheen: My Blood Is Now HIV Free.” While trying to capitalize on Sheen’s often-shocking statements, the publication failed to report on the meaning behind his statement.

Regardless of Sheen’s personal style, this one can be classified as “kind of true.” Sheen has reportedly begun treatment and has reached undetectable levels of HIV. He is still HIV-positive, but for lack of better words, his blood could be considered “HIV free,” meaning that he has less than 20 copies of the virus in his blood. HIV, however, lives in the reservoirs of the body, and he is still HIV-positive. Sheen will need to continue treatment in order to maintain these levels.

National Enquirer: “Decades of Debauchery Have Finally Caught Up to Charlie Sheen”

False. Promiscuity does not transmit HIV. One exposure to the virus contained in blood, semen, pre-ejaculatory semen, vaginal fluids, anal fluids, or breast milk is how HIV is transmitted. HIV does not discriminate against people who have had one sexual parter or 5,000 sexual partners, nor should the national media.

The Daily Caller: “Charlie Sheen has AIDS?”

False. No, he doesn’t have AIDS. The term AIDS should not be used when discussing anyone who reveals their HIV-positive status. When it does, please report it in the comments section below.

BET.com: “The actor allegedly spread the virus to several other women.”

False until further clarified. As of now, the only publication reporting that Sheen has infected others is The National Enquirer. This is evidence of the failure of the mainstream media’s ability to responsibly report on HIV. Until one of Sheen’s sexual partners chooses to step forward and produce test results corroborating her accusation, the media should withhold its statements on other transmissions. Sources like BET would typically never cite the National Enquirer as a source, but given the salacious nature of a celebrity who is reportedly HIV-positive, it is evident that respectable publications are willing to compromise their integrity. Currently, no source is discussing the responsibility of Sheen’s sexual partners in regards to HIV transmission and disclosure, only that of Sheen’s.

Radar Online: “Charlie had sex with multiple partner since learning his HIV status without informing them of his potentially deadly HIV infection,” one source told The ENQUIRER.”

False until further verified. Again, the National Enquirer has a famous history of fabricating stories. Even though Radar Online is not widely considered to be a trusted news source, it is this kind of unverified and stigma-fueled language that leads people to keep from disclosing their status to their friends and family.

News.com.au: “Sheen to Say He’s Cured of HIV”

False. This irresponsible editorialization of Sheen’s alleged undetectable HIV-positive status was used to intentionally mislead the site’s audience into thinking Sheen was up to his antics as usual. Sheen, who allegedly said he “has conquered” HIV, is referring to his successful use of treatment to acheive and undetectable viral load. Upon clicking the social media link, the headline changes to “Sheen to Make a ‘Revealing Personal Announcement,'” demonstrating a clear, intentional use of a salacious headline to encourage clicks at the sake of compromising the validity of Sheen’s statement.

Rio De Janeiro's LGBT Pride Parade Turns 20 In Spectacular Fashion

Rio De Janeiro's LGBT Pride Parade Turns 20 In Spectacular Fashion

Revelers from all over the world touched down in Rio de Janeiro this past weekend for the 20th anniversary of the LGBT Pride parade, and from the looks of these photos, the event was as epic as ever.

The 2015 festivities began with a poignant tribute to the victims of last week’s attacks in Paris, as well as those who died after two dams burst and caused a mudslide in southeastern Brazil earlier this month.

“Despite the great joy we feel to be alive, we cannot forget the tragedy for those families who have lost their loved ones, just as so many of us have lost loved one too,” one drag queen told Reuters.

Of course, there was plenty of sparkle amidst the anguish. Check out photos of the celebrations below!

REVIEW: Haché Burgers – Shoreditch, London

REVIEW: Haché Burgers – Shoreditch, London

Haché Burgers in Shoreditch is part of a relatively upmarket chain of burger joints.

Comfortable seating, seductive lighting, cool music – this is a burger restaurant for when you want to relax, take your time, and enjoy your burger while catching up with friends after a long day in the office.

The service was friendly and professional – the young, attractive manager was particularly switched on – and the burgers were good.

I had a basic cheese burger, but it was a solid beef patty served medium and still juicy and full of flavor, washed down with a bottle of Budvar beer.

Dinner at Haché Burgers isn’t going to be the most exciting night of your life, but it’s a good place to get a burger.
