Anti-Equality Referendum Passes in Slovenia

Anti-Equality Referendum Passes in Slovenia

Today opponents of marriage equality voted to deny LGBT Slovenians their right to marry. With a vote of XXX percent, a referendum aimed at defeating Slovenia’s marriage equality legislation passed.

On March 3, Slovenia’s national parliament approved legislation granting marriage rights for same-sex couples by a vote of 51 to 28. The following week, opponents of LGBT equality succeeded in bringing the measure to a national referendum. Despite efforts of LGBT advocates, the marriage equality legislation that passed earlier this year was overturned.

We would like to congratulate the Slovenian advocates who worked tirelessly to galvanize support for this tremendously important referendum. They should be proud of their efforts, we are hopeful that they will achieve their long sought goal of full marriage equality in Slovenia soon.
