Must-See LGBTQ TV: Nia’s powers grow on ‘Supergirl,’ and ‘Dumplin’ premieres on Netflix

Sunday’s episode of Supergirl centers on Nia Nial (Nicole Maines), the first trans superhero to appear on television, coming to terms with her powers. In the episode “Bunker Hill,” Nia has a powerful dream about Agent Liberty but refuses to look at it as a prophetic dream and pushes it aside. After noticing something is bothering Nia, Kara enlists Brainy’s help, and the two try to persuade Nia to embrace her destiny. Supergirl: Sunday, 8pm on The CW.
Netflix film Dumplin’ will be released on the streaming service this Friday. Based on the novel of the same name by bisexual author Julie Murphy, the movie follows Willowdean, a plus-sized girl who enters a beauty pageant in Texas, and inspires a group of outcasts. The outcasts include lesbian Hannah played by queer and non-binary actor Bex Taylor Klaus. Drag Race’s Ginger Minj and several other drag queens also star in the film, as mentors to Willowdean. Dumplin: Friday on Netflix.
