In a wide-ranging interview with Dallas station WFAA, former president Jimmy Carter indicated that while gay people “should have equal rights to marry” he thinks states should still be allowed to ban same-sex marriage.

Said Carter:

“I’m kind of inclined to let the states decide individually. And now as you see more and more states are deciding on gay marriages every year. But if Texas doesn’t want to have gay marriage, then I think that’s a right for Texas people to decide.”

WFAA reports:

Carter, 90, has expressed support for gay marriage before, but his comments now on letting the states decide appear to contrast with a 2013 interview with CNN in which the 39th president said that same-sex marriage should be legal nationwide.

Carter also discussed gay rights as it relates to his Baptist faith.
