“I am Proud to be an NBA Referee and I am Proud to be a Gay Man”

NBA veteran referee Bill Kennedy came out publically as gay this week, following Sacramento Kings guard Rajon Rondo’s disturbing slurs during a game on December 3 in Mexico City.

“I am proud to be an NBA referee and I am proud to be a gay man,” Kennedy told Yahoo Sports on Sunday night. “I am following in the footsteps of others who have self-identified in the hopes that will send a message to young men and women in sports that you must allow no one to make you feel ashamed of who you are.”

The NBA suspended Rondo for his discriminatory and hurtful comments and commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement of support for Kennedy.

“I wholeheartedly support Bill’s decision to live his life proudly and openly,” he told Yahoo Sports.

Kennedy is the second NBA referee to come out publicly, following NBA referee Violet Palmer’s announcement in the summer of 2014.

HRC applauds not only Kennedy’s decision to live openly and proudly, but also the NBA’s swift and full-throated support.
