HRC Participates in Campaign for Southern Equality Convening in Alabama
Post contributed by HRC Alabama Field Organizer Tori Wolfe-Sisson
This month, HRC joined the Campaign for Southern Equality at a convening in Alabama. HRC was part of the diverse planning committee working to build a safe, communal space and establishing dynamic ways to nurture relationships across communities of color, faith, socioeconomic status and linguistic differences.
Breakout sessions included discussion around cultural humility, allies in action, preserving our LGBTQ history and organizing through intersections.
The convening was well attended, boasting over 70 participants. With childcare and interpretation, we worked to include as much of the community as possible. Our goal was best summed up in the Spanish word “encontrar,” meaning, “to find.” We sought to find ourselves as community members through our definition of community here as diverse LGBTQ people in the South fighting for change.
