Five of Hillary Clinton’s Best Quotes on LGBT Equality

Today, the Human Rights Campaign announced its support for Hillary Clinton for president in 2016. As a U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and now leading Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton has been a proven champion for LGBT equality. But don’t just take our word for it. Check out just a few of our favorite Clinton quotes on LGBT equality:

1.) Hillary Clinton calls for an end to transgender violence.

In October, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke at HRC’s board meeting, promising to do more to end the violence.

“We’ve got to address the crisis of transphobic violence,” she said. “2015 has seen the murder of at least 19 transgender women, primarily women of color. And nobody knows how much violence goes unreported or ignored. And we need to say, with one voice, that transgender people are valued, they are loved, they are us, they desire to be treated fairly and equally.

2.) Hillary Clinton endorses marriage equality.

In 2012, Hillary Clinton joined the Human Rights Campaign’s Americans for Marriage Equality campaign to announce her support for same-sex marriage.

“LGBT Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones – and they are full and equal citizens, and deserve the rights of citizenship. That includes marriage,” Clinton said in the video. “That’s why I support marriage for lesbian and gay couples. I support it personally and as a matter of policy and law, embedded in a broader effort to advance equality and opportunity for LGBT Americans and for all Americans. […]To deny the opportunity to any of our daughters and sons solely on the basis of who they are and who they love is to deny them the chance to live up to their God given potential.”

3.) Hilary Clinton calls the Equality Act is her highest priority.

At a CSPAN town hall meeting in October, Hillary Clinton further emphasized her support for full federal LGBT equality.

“We have to pass the Equality Act, which is currently pending in Congress,” she said. “That will be my highest priority”

4.) Hillary Clinton supports LGBT youth and their families.

In December, Clinton called for an end to the dangerous and widely-debunked practice of conversion therapy.

“It is time to put an end to conversion therapy for minors,” she tweeted. “We should be supporting LGBT kids—not trying to change them.

5.) Hillary Clinton stands in support of LGBT equality worldwide.

In recognition of International Human Rigths Day in 2011, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for an end to anti-LGBT violence. ““Being LGBT does not make you less human. And that is why gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights,” she said
