OkCupid releases major product updates in 2022

OkCupid releases major product updates in 2022

Daters are excited about the brand-new features on OkCupid

OkCupid was one of the first dating apps on the market, making our debut in 2004. And while some things have stayed the same — like our focus on matching singles on what really matters — plenty has changed, especially when it comes to OkCupid’s product offerings. In fact, just this year we’ve launched dozens of new product features to better help you find who you’re looking for. Here are some of the favorites.

Cupid’s Picks

Your Cupid’s Picks are refreshed daily.

Our famous algorithm matches you with people you’re compatible with — based on your preferences, their preferences, and the questions you’ve answered in common. But our new Cupid’s Picks feature takes it one step further, finding you people you’re not only super compatible with, but you’re more likely to match with, too. Your Cupid’s Picks are refreshed daily so you know you’re getting the top people for you right now with each new batch.

OkCupid Now Available in 9 Languages

Love knows no bounds…but being able to use OkCupid in your language of preference certainly makes things easier! OkCupid has been available in English, French, Turkish, and German — and now we’re proud to also be available in Argentinian Spanish, Chinese Traditional, Dutch, Swedish, and Indonesian. Daters with their devices set to any of these languages can now view questions, conversations, notifications, and every part of the app in their preferred language.

Conversation Starters

Pick a message to send, or scroll to see more of their profile.

You have a match, congrats! Now what? We’ve gotten lots of feedback from daters that deciding how to break the ice with a new match can be tricky. Our brand-new feature takes the guesswork out of it — now when you match, we give you some top-performing icebreakers as suggestions so it’s as simple as one click. Or if you want to make it a bit more personalized, when you match today you also have the option of scrolling back through your match’s profile. This way, you can find something you have in common — maybe they have a photo with a dog and you’re a dog lover too, or they wrote in their profile they need travel tips for Portugal and you’re an expert — and message them about that. Whatever you choose, don’t wait to make a move. This feature is currently available on Android, and is coming to iOS soon.

Chat Reactions

Don’t want to share your phone number with someone you’ve never met before? We get it, and we don’t think you should, either! That’s why we’ve just launched chat reactions so messaging on the app feels more like texting than ever. React with a 😍😂😉🔥😢👍or ❤️depending on your mood, and keep your conversation on OkCupid until you feel fully comfortable.

LGBTQ+ Definitions

Learn more about each gender and orientation.

After hearing from LGBTQ+ users, we realized there was an opportunity to educate and inform people about the different identities we offer. Now, each of our gender and orientation options include definitions. We worked with the Human Rights Campaign on these definitions to help people better understand what these terms mean, and better serve all our users. Learn more here.

Selfie Verification

One of our most exciting new features coming this year is selfie verification. Safety is a top priority at OkCupid, and soon daters using the app can look specifically for dates who have verified their profile with a selfie. Our support team reviews every single one so you can feel confident that you’re matching with the real person. It only takes a minute to upload your selfie for profile verification, and it’s well worth it — 64% of OkCupid users surveyed said they’re more likely to match with a verified profile. It will be available to users in the next few weeks.

Photo Messaging

Another reason to keep your conversations on OkCupid: we’ll soon have photo messaging, too! So don’t just describe the view to your match, send them a photo. But keep it PG, okay? Watch out for this new feature coming in the next several weeks.

OkCupid and Sweatcoin Data Shows Singles Are Prioritizing Health

OkCupid and Sweatcoin Data Shows Singles Are Prioritizing Health

This summer daters are opting for healthier date ideas, from hikes to walks in the park

OkCupid is partnering with Sweatcoin, the market-leading move-to-earn app that rewards your daily steps with a new-generation currency, as singles continue to prioritize health and wellness. On OkCupid, a majority (87%) of 5 million daters said they enjoy exercising — and daters who do enjoy breaking a sweat received 26% more Matches and 8% more Likes over the past few months.

This summer, 80% of Gen Z and Millennial OkCupid respondents said health and wellness is as important as attraction and chemistry when it comes to a partner. And while dinner or drinks will never be out of style, people are really interested in more active dates. Recently, almost 7 in 10 people on OkCupid said they feel more comfortable and relaxed on walking dates than face-to-face dates at a bar, coffee shop or restaurant. And Gen Z daters were the most likely to agree that the idea of a walking date felt like less pressure.

Because of this, we have teamed up to encourage singles to give hiking, walking or running dates a try by offering a limited number of free 3-month premium subscriptions to OkCupid for Sweatcoin users only. When using Sweatcoin, daters can take a walk in Central Park or Zion National Park or Griffith Park (or any park nearby!) and be rewarded with Sweatcoins that can be redeemed either for cool new products in the in-app marketplace, or even donated to a range of global charities.

According to Sweatcoin’s data, the city where people are walking the most is the beautiful city of Cambridge, Massachusetts where Sweatcoin users are walking an average of 5,113 steps a day. The top 10 cities Americans are walking the most include:

  1. Cambridge, MA
  2. State College, PA
  3. Blacksburg, VA
  4. Miami Beach, FL
  5. Rialto, CA
  6. West Lafayette, IN
  7. Charlottesville, VA
  8. Berkeley, CA
  9. Anderson, SC
  10. Ashburn, VA

There’s been over 1 million people on OkCupid in these areas who have said they enjoy exercising — with 94% of respondents (from our in-app question “Is walking something you enjoy doing?”) agreeing that walking is a relaxing way to work out and 63% of respondents (from our in-app question “Does the idea of a walking date feel like less pressure than a face-to-face date?”) believing walking dates are more comfortable.

And now is the best time to find a like-minded date! There’s been almost 7 million mentions of phrases like “hike” and “walk” on OkCupid profiles, with a 17%+ increase in mentions earlier this year, so people are looking for healthier alternatives to the typical date.

OkCupid Defines Identity Options to Help Non-binary and Transgender Daters

OkCupid Defines Identity Options to Help Non-binary and Transgender Daters

OkCupid is also releasing new in-app questions for LGBTQ+ users

OkCupid was the first dating app to offer expanded gender and orientation options, and we now offer users 22 genders and 20 orientation options. We’re also one of the only non-exclusively LGBTQ+ dating apps that does not force users to select being shown in a binary context. Last Pride Month, we further expanded our identity options for LGBTQ+ users, now giving queer daters over 60 identities to choose from. (And since we know people don’t fit in a single box we allow you to choose up to 5 different identities!) This Pride Month, we’re excited to share that we have added new in-app, matching questions dedicated to our LGBTQ+ daters around the world.

The LGBTQIA community is not only important to us, it’s important to you. Nearly all (97%) of our daters on OkCupid care about LGBTQ+ issues, and 7 in 10 daters say it is important that their match cares about the LGBTQ+ community. We also found that 97% of nearly 1.5 million people on OkCupid support marriage equality. We have always believed love is love.

Our new matching questions, added in honor of Pride Month, help you discover everything from how a match supports the transgender community to what pride means to them. These matching questions, along with all of our other questions about and for the LGBTQ+ community, have been answered 30 million times to date.

What we’re asking:

  • Do you advocate for LGBTQ+ rights?
  • Is it important that your date cares about transgender rights?
  • Is it OK to silently support the transgender movement?
  • Do you think LGBTQ+ rights are at risk given the current Supreme Court?
  • What does Pride mean to you?
  • How would you prefer to have children?

What you’re saying:

  • 74% of OkCupid respondents say they advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, and Gen Z are 7% more likely than Millennials and 21% more likely than Gen X to do so
  • About 7 in 10 Gen Zers (67%) and Millennials (64%) say it’s important that their date cares about transgender rights
  • 98% of non-binary respondents said it’s important that their date cares about transgender rights
  • 71% of female respondents said it’s important that their date cares about transgender rights
  • 51% of male respondents said it’s important that their date cares about transgender rights
  • People who said every voice and vote matters when supporting the transgender movement received 6% more conversations and 11% more Likes than those who feel it’s a personal choice to silently support the movement
  • A majority (71%) of OkCupid respondents in the United States feel LGBTQ+ rights are at risk given the current Supreme Court, and Millennials are the most concerned generation
  • 43% of LGBTQ+ respondents said Pride means equal rights for all; 38% said being authentically them; and 19% said celebrating everyone
  • 57% of gay men would like children, with 31% wanting to adopt, 19% choosing surrogacy 7% considering fostering (while 43% of gay men said they don’t want children)
  • 65% of lesbian women would like children, with 42% saying they or their partner would carry the baby, 21% wanting to adopt and 2% who would opt for surrogacy (while 36% do not want children)

We are also updating our gender and orientation pages on our app. After hearing from different LGBTQ+ users, we realized there was an opportunity to educate and inform people about the different identities we offer. Beginning soon, we will be adding definitions to each of our gender and orientation options to help people better understand what these terms mean, and better serve all our users.

“As we head into Pride month, OkCupid is ensuring users can more accurately and authentically be represented on the platform. We know from our work the difference this makes to LGBTQ+ people,” said Shoshana Goldberg, Ph.D. MPH, Director of the HRC’s Public Education & Research Program. “Kudos to them for their continued commitment to getting LGBTQ+ representation on the platform right.”

Please consider making a donation to HRC today to fuel the fight for equality.
