7 safety tips to keep in mind year-round

7 safety tips to keep in mind year-round

Love abounds during the holidays! Meet someone new & stay safe this season

The holiday season is a great time to meet someone—seriously! It’s a festive time of year, and when people aren’t spending time with their families, they’re eager to talk to someone who’s not in their family, that they just may be introducing to their family this time next year. Just like with any time of year, it’s important to keep safety top of mind when meeting someone new. So our safety experts at OkCupid have put together a guide to remind “holidaters” on ways to be safe — both online and when meeting for the first time.

  1. Take the Rein(deer): We encourage daters to consider using their own transportation to first dates, such as a personal vehicle or rideshare (or sled).
  2. There’s no place like home for the holidays: And that’s probably because it’s your special, safe place. So when first chatting with matches, we suggest daters don’t get too specific and avoid providing personal details, such as their home address or places they frequent.
  3. Some people are worth melting for: That includes you! A good match won’t pressure you to provide your phone number until you feel comfortable. We encourage everyone to take their time when moving conversations off the app.
  4. Sleigh it loud and proud: Be yourself! Only say yes to something you feel 100% comfortable with.
  5. Keep your eggnog close and your friends closer: Make sure to keep your drinks close and only accept a drink from someone you know and trust. Daters should meet in public places and share their plans with family and friends.
  6. Maybe hot chocolate wants to be called beautiful chocolate just once: Everyone has different likes and dislikes, so active communication is important when you are getting to know someone. Mutual respect for each other’s boundaries is key.
  7. Report Scrooges back to the app: We encourage everyone to report all suspicious and offensive behavior on OkCupid. Our team will review the report and take the necessary action to remove any inappropriate profile from our platform.

Daters Find Midterm Voters More Attractive

Daters Find Midterm Voters More Attractive

New data from OkCupid shows that singles who vote in local and midterm elections get more Likes and Matches

Ahead of National Voter Registration Day on September 20th, OkCupid and Vote.org are teaming up to encourage young daters across the nation to register to vote and make their voices heard in this year’s midterm elections. Beginning in September and running through Election Day in November, OkCupid will be driving its users in the United States to Vote.org’s resources to help people register to vote, request an absentee ballot, and find their polling place.

About 9 in 10 (86%) of nearly 3 million daters on OkCupid in the United States are currently registered to vote — and singles are looking for people who participate in all elections. Last year, people who said they vote in midterm and local elections got 35% more Matches and 26% more Likes than those who only vote in the general election. They also had 52% more conversations on our dating app when compared to people who said they don’t vote.

Only on OkCupid can you match on what matters through in-app questions. This year, we’ve found that politics is the biggest conversation starter and dealbreaker. Our matching questions related to politics and voting have been answered more than 150 million times over the years. So we’ve added brand-new in-app matching questions ahead of the 2022 midterm elections to help our daters navigate conversations around the upcoming election and biggest political issues:

Right now, almost 8 in 10 people on OkCupid (65% of Gen Z, 76% of Millennials and 83% of Gen X respondents) plan to vote in the 2022 midterm elections, held on Tuesday, November 8th. And singles who plan to vote in the midterms are reaping the benefits. They are getting 31% more Matches, having 21% more conversations, and receiving 14% more Likes.

“We know our young daters are politically engaged. A majority of Gen Z (79%) and Millennial (86%) singles on OkCupid are registered to vote, and Millennials are most likely to say they couldn’t date someone who doesn’t vote.” said Michael Kaye, head of global communications at OkCupid. “We’re excited to partner with Vote.org to help increase voter turnout and reach millions of young voters on OkCupid.”

“Voter registration and engagement among Generation Z and Millennials is increasing across the country,” said Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org. “We’re proud to partner with OkCupid, which reaches millions of engaged young people seeking connection with others. Just as OkCupid works to remove barriers from finding love, Vote.org removes the hurdles associated with voting. Daters on OkCupid are planning for their future, and so is Vote.org. Our democracy thrives when we connect and join together. Now, we’re excited to work with OkCupid to energize more young people as they make their plan to vote on or before November 8.”

Vote.org is the nation’s largest voter registration and activation platform in the country. Are you Vote Ready? Go to Vote.org to register to vote, verify your registration, request an absentee ballot, find your polling location, sign up for election reminders and more. Vote.org is your one-stop shop to prepare to vote and make your voice heard.

Will You…Split The Rent?

Will You…Split The Rent?

Rent, real estate and relationships are on daters’ minds, according to new data from OkCupid and Realtor.com

Over the past few years, nearly 4 million daters on OkCupid answered the in-app matching question “Are you currently saving to buy your own home?” with respondents who said “Yes” jumping from 41% in 2019 to 48% in 2022. And this summer, data revealed that singles who are saving to buy a home got 13% more Likes and 24% more Matches on OkCupid than those who aren’t.

A trend we’re seeing is that communication skills and a great sense of humor aren’t the only items on dater’s wish lists these days. They’re now prioritizing someone who’s investing in their future, specifically in real estate. In fact, Millennials are 32% more likely than Gen X to say owning a home is a bigger turn-on than being attractive, and Gen Zers are 27% more likely than Gen X to say the same. One-third (33%) of daters go so far to say it’s important that their match has a high credit score.

According to Realtor.com, rents are increasing by double-digit percentages in major cities, including Miami (26.2%), New York (25.4%), Boston (24.8%), Chicago (20.6%) and Orlando (20.4%). So it’s no wonder that over half of OkCupid daters in these cities are looking for a partner to move in with. A majority of respondents on OkCupid are open to moving in with someone they’re dating within 1–2 years, with 37% of people willing to move in with a partner between 6 months to 1 year; 34% of people wanting to wait 1–2 years; 17% saying less than 6 months; and 12% waiting 2+ years. And 87% of OkCupid respondents said they want to split the rent when they move in with a partner.

Daters can save thousands on rent by splitting a one-bedroom apartment with their partner. According to Realtor.com, here is how much people can save in each of the top 10 cities for rent growth in the United States right now:

And singles in these cities are still looking for meaningful, serious relationships. Almost two million daters across the country answered OkCupid’s in-app question “What’s more interesting to you right now?,” with response options “love” and “sex,” over the past two years, and the majority of daters in Miami (73%), New York (73%), Boston (72%), Chicago (72%), Orlando (72%), San Jose (73%), San Diego (69%), Charlotte (72%), Dallas (72%) and Nashville (70%) are more interested in love over sex right now.

So the positive side of rents rising? Looking for a lifelong partner ASAP is on the rise, too. You just may find the love of your life, and move in together, before the end of the year if you play your cards right. Skip the “holding a fish”selfie, and post a pic of you hanging out in your furnished apartment!
