Music Lovers Get More Love
OkCupid data reveals that loving music is good for your dating life
Music and love have long gone hand-in-hand. There’s a song (correction: thousands of songs) for every stage of a relationship — and un-relationship, for that matter, not to discount the plethora of breakup ballads. And who doesn’t know at least a dozen couples who squeal “That’s our song!” when John Legend’s “All of Me” starts to play?
But when we partnered up with TuneIn to bring OkCupid daters some amazing anthems to get them in the mood for romance, we discovered even more reasons why music is so important when it comes to love, and those looking for it. Looking at how singles answered our dozens of OkCupid matching questions on music, not only was TuneIn able to curate some awesome stations specifically with daters in mind, but we also uncovered why music is the most important love language.
Note to singles: music is a great icebreaker. It’s an interest that many daters share, and look forward to discussing. In fact, there are nearly 5 million mentions of ‘music’ on OkCupid profiles; if we also considered mentions of genres and performers, that number would increase almost 10X. Therefore it’s no surprise that 85% of daters say music has a big influence on their lives.
And on their dating lives, too. In fact, music is the most popular response (above movies, books, and sports) to the question ‘Which would you prefer your ideal match to be more into?’ with 37% of respondents selecting music. In addition, a third of singles believe a person’s musical preference is a good indicator of their intelligence level. So keep this in mind when you’re chatting on OkCupid with your Quarantine Crush. If you need some background music while you do, check out the Quarantine Crush music station, exclusively on TuneIn.

Now we’re almost a year into pandemic lockdown, singles are seeking connection more than ever. The lockdown has had plenty of positive effects on dating (learn more here), but it has also left some singles feeling particularly lonely. And when that loneliness hits, more than half of daters say they turn to music to cheer them up. When answering the OkCupid question ‘When you are feeling down or blue, which is most comforting to you?’ 53% of singles selected Music, followed by Exercise at 20%. Food and Sex were the least popular responses.
Singles look to music when they’re feeling butterflies, too. Eighty-six percent of daters say they listen to music while getting ready for a date, which brings us to the next music station from TuneIn, You Got This: Pre-Date Jams.

We now know that music is a great conversation starter, and it can be a real mood-booster for singles as they navigate dating, but did you also know that a love for music increases your chances of love? We have the data to prove it. People with ‘music’ in their OkCupid profile are more likely to have conversations than those who don’t, and daters who say music has a big influence on their lives get 28% more likes than those who say it doesn’t.
Not only does sharing your love for music get you closer to finding a match, but it can also help you set the mood once you’ve found them. Here’s a hot tip (pun intended): 95% of daters like having music on while they’re hooking up. So update your OkCupid profile to share your musical preferences and increase your chances of likes, find a match and set up a virtual date, and when it’s time to set the mood, fire up TuneIn’s Setting the Mood music station for the perfect romance-inducing playlist.
