Vaccinated is the new tall, dark and handsome
It’s officially the summer of love. After over a year of social distancing and virtual meetups, daters are ready to meet in person, and there’s a newfound emphasis on wanting to do so in a way that is safe for themselves and others. That’s why on Monday, May 24 OkCupid is proud to release the “I’m Vaccinated” profile badge for all daters who report that they’ve had at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccination. Everyone who adds the badge to their profile in the first 48 hours will receive a free Boost, and all who add the badge will also be featured in the Vaccinated Stack, which will be released later in June. Those who do not yet have the vaccine will be given resources and information on where to find one when available.
Daters today are more transparent about their health and wellness than ever, particularly when it comes to their vaccination status. The phrase “I’m vaccinated” on OkCupid profiles increased over 1,400% this month compared to January. And the vaccine is really helping people find love. More than 7 in 10 daters say they will get the Covid-19 vaccine, and those who are planning to get it or already have are getting 15% more likes and 14% more matches, and having 4.5% more conversations.
As the vaccine continues to roll out around the world, we anticipate in-person dates increasing significantly. In fact, only 7% of singles on OkCupid today say they’re not comfortable with in-person dating. And while virtual dating certainly has its perks, we expect IRL dates will also lead to more lasting connections; over half of OkCupid daters agreed that an in-person date was more meaningful than a virtual one.

Every month we will be sharing the latest OkCupid matching questions and responses, showing what’s top of mind for our millions and millions of daters around the world. Our newest questions are about post-pandemic dating behaviors, and they’ve already gotten nearly 200,000 responses from our users. These new questions tell us the attitudes and behaviors of daters in a post-pandemic world.
Activity on OkCupid also alerts us to new dating trends. One trend we saw sparked by the pandemic was that women in particular became more invested in online dating. At the beginning of the pandemic, activity and engagement increased among women. They were sending more first messages than they were previously, and that has continued post-pandemic. And now, it’s showing to have paid off: conversations initiated by women on OkCupid tend to last more than double the length of those started by men.

Daters on OkCupid have long been vocal about finding matches who share their beliefs and values, particularly when it comes to the causes they care about. In 2020, we found that people on OkCupid were passionate about matching with fellow daters who were registered to vote, and support the BLM movement. And so far in 2021, our data shows that OkCupid daters are hot for climate change advocates. In fact, nine in 10 daters on OkCupid say it is important to them that their match cares about the environment. Over the past four years, there’s been an over 450% increase in mentions of climate change and the environment on OkCupid profiles, and we anticipate that trend will continue as daters are becoming increasingly adamant about signaling to others what’s important to them. And these days, it’s definitely climate change. After all, the environment is one of the most popular question topics we have, with our questions on climate change and the environment garnering 7.5M responses worldwide.
Eighty-three percent of people on OkCupid are concerned about climate change, and so it’s not surprising that only 7% of OkCupid daters say they ‘rarely’ or ‘never’ recycle. Even their do-good-ing does not go to waste; people on OkCupid who are concerned about climate change get 37% more likes and 11% more matches than those who are not. We anticipate that the introduction of our Climate Change Advocate Badge and Stack will further increase likes and matches for these daters, potentially up to 4x.
Our data often reveals steep divides between men and women’s views on a variety of topics, but climate change is one where men and women are closely aligned. Women get the gold green star when it comes to caring about the planet, but men are not far behind, with 89% of women and 83% of men responding ‘Yes’ to ‘Is it important that your match cares about the environment?’ This 6% divide is one of the closest between the genders of any OkCupid questions, whether the topic is light or more serious. For example, when it comes to gun control reform, women are 18% more likely than men to believe the US needs stricter laws and there’s a 15% difference between genders on willingness to date someone who doesn’t support gender equality, with women being significantly less likely. Paying extra for guacamole is even more divisive than caring about climate change, as women are 8% more likely to do so.
