At last, dying widower gets Texas officials to correct his late husband’s death certificate

Forty days after the US Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal nationwide, John Stone-Hoskins has finally gotten the state of Texas to amend his late husband’s death certificate to reflect that they were married.

Stone-Hoskins’ husband James committed suicide in January and he himself has cancer with a prognosis of less than two months to live.

Stone-Hoskins received an amended death certificate on Thursday (6 August). He is now listed as ‘husband’ instead of ‘significant other,’ according to Towleroad.com.

He had said in court Thursday: ‘I have a terminal liver disease, melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, breast disease, a heart defect, in addition to a defective aorta, which was not discovered until recently. My doctors expect me to live another 45 to 60 days.

‘I also wish to have the dignity of being listed on my deceased husband’s death certificate.’

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton faced possible contempt charges for refusing to recognize a same-sex marriage after the Supreme Court’s June ruling.

Paxton and Kirk Cole, interim director of the Department of State Health Services, had been ordered to explain before a federal court next next week why the state would not provide  Stone-Hoskins with the amended death certificate for his husband.
