As Rowan County Clerk sits in jail, same-sex couples issued marriage licenses by her staff

After a months-long legal battle, same-sex couples were issued marriages licenses at the Rowan County Clerk’s office in Kentucky on Friday (4 September).

As County Clerk Kim Davis remains in jail on a contempt of court charge, one of her deputies calmly issued the first license of the day to James Yates and Will Smith who had been denied a license five times prior.

The deputy clerk calmly checked IDs, printed out the licenses and shook the hands of each man after a short chat before a large gathering of media and supporters. The couple then shared an emotional embrace.

‘This means, at least for this area, that civil rights are civil rights,’ Yates told reporters. ‘We’re very happy.’

Several other couples immediately followed including Tim Long and Michael Long who had a commitment ceremony seven years ago and wanted to now get married in their home county.

They were called ‘perverts’ by two demonstrators outside the office. Joe Davis, who is the fourth husband of Kim Davis, was also present and could be heard saying ‘disgraceful’ before walking out, according to the Courier-Journal.

Tim Long said the protesters’ words ‘don’t hurt as bad, because love wins.’
