Anti-LGBTQ Agitator Selected to Lead Prominent Hate Group
Brian Brown, the head of the shadowy anti-LGBTQ group National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has been elected to lead the notorious World Congress of Families (WCF), an anti-LGBTQ hate group. His election occurred during WCF’s 10th international gathering held in Tbilisi, Georgia last month.
Designated an anti-LGBT hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, WCF provides a platform for some of the most virulently anti-LGBTQ extremists from around the world.
Since 1997, WCF has held conferences and events around the world that foster homophobia and transphobia under the guise of protecting the “natural family.” It is connected to the highest levels of government in countries across five continents where it operates. WCF’s activities have ranged from holding conferences in Nigeria focused on denying rights to LGBTQ people to working to silence the Russian LGBTQ community.
Brown was elected as WCF president at the WCF X conference that took place May 15-18, the same time LGBTQ Georgians celebrated the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT). In 2013, IDAHOT was marred by anti-LGBTQ violence in the capital.
Since 2012, Brown has publicly supported anti-LGBTQ movements and traveled to France, Russia, Australia, Spain and Trinidad and Tobago. In an interview in Russia in 2013, Brown said, “Right now you’re having the fight about adoption, but the adoption issue is indivisible from the marriage issue. If you don’t defend your values now, I’m afraid we’re going to see very negative developments all over the world.”
The most recent conference of this hate group, WCF IX, was held in Salt Lake City, Utah in October 2015 and HRC hosted an Inclusive Families Conference in Salt Lake City days before it. HRC’s ‘Export of Hate’ report released last June provides detailed information about the activities of the WCF and its participants and supporters.
