CNN WILL BE EXCLUSIVE BROADCAST PARTNER OF HRC FOUNDATION’S HISTORIC 2020 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES TOWN HALL ON OCT. 10: The evening, expected to draw the largest-ever audience for a Democratic presidential town hall devoted to LGBTQ issues, will mark the first time in history that a major cable news network will air a presidential event devoted to issues of importance to the LGBTQ community. The town hall will take place on Thursday, October 10 at The Novo in Los Angeles. Said HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid): “We are eager to hear from this field of Democratic presidential candidates about how they plan to win full federal equality, defend the fundamental equality of LGBTQ people, and protect the most vulnerable among us — both here in the United States and around the globe — from stigma, institutional inequality, discrimination and violence.” More from HRC, CNN and Politico.

THROWBACK THURSDAY — A LOOK BACK AT HRC’S PREVIOUS PRESIDENTIAL TOWN HALLS: The HRC Foundation hosted presidential town halls in 2004 and 2008. At the 2008 event, co-sponsored by Logo and hosted by Melissa Etheridge, the main topics were marriage equality, ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ and… whether being gay is a choice. My, how times have changed. But what hasn’t changed is the need for a leader on LGBTQ equality in the White House:

  • Today, in 30 states, LGBTQ people remain at risk of being fired, evicted or denied services because of who we are, and 35 states have yet to ban the dangerous and debunked practice of “conversion therapy.”
  • Hate crimes are rising, and more than 100 transgender people — most of them transgender women of color — have been killed in the U.S. in the last five years.
  • The Trump-Pence Administration is directly attacking our community by banning transgender troops from serving our country openly, undermining health care services for people living with HIV and seeking to erase LGBTQ people from protections under law.

REP. JENNIFER WEXTON (D-VA) INTRODUCES BILL TO BLOCK HUD RULE ALLOWING ANTI-TRANSGENDER DISCRIMINATION IN SHELTERS: Said HRC Associate Legal Director Robin Maril at a July hearing on the HUD rule: “No one should be turned away from shelter or required to sacrifice their safety to get the services they need, especially when those services are funded by the U.S. taxpayer.” More from ThinkProgress.

MORNING MUST READ — COLUMBUS DISPATCH ON WHY OHIO MUST PASS THE FAIRNESS ACT TO PROTECT LGBTQ PEOPLE: “Ohio politicians of all stripes have a chance to take a stand against bigotry by supporting Senate Bill 11, the ‘Ohio Fairness Act,’ which would add sexual [orientation] and gender identity to the classes protected in the state’s anti-discrimination law,” writes the editorial board. “Passing it would make Ohio one of the majority of states that provide explicit protection.” Read the full piece from The Columbus Dispatch.

ICYMI — MISSISSIPPI WEDDING VENUE OWNER REFUSES SERVICE TO COUPLE — SAYING THEY WON’T ALLOW INTERRACIAL OR SAME-SEX WEDDINGS: “Religion should never be exploited as a license to discriminate,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “This incident is yet another glaring example of how white supremacy and anti-LGBTQ bigotry are not merely things of the past. We must take action against these blatantly illegal practices.” More from The New York Times.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS DIRECTS CORONER TO BEGIN COLLECTING DATA ON SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND GENDER IDENTITY: This information will assist in determining rates of causes of death among members of the LGBTQ community. More from the Los Angeles Times.

DATA SHOWS THAT BLOCKING LGBTQ KEYWORDS CAUSES BRANDS TO MISS BIG OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENGAGEMENT: Gum Gum CEO Phil Schraeder writes in AdAge that during the recent U.S. Women’s World Cup, keyword blocking to avoid terms like ‘gay,’ ‘lesbian,’ ‘queer’ or ‘LGBTQ,’ caused brands to miss “swarms of enthusiastic eyeballs with viral headlines and highly-clicked content including positive LGBTQ language.” More from AdAge.
