#AM_Equality Tipsheet: September 28, 2018

WE BELIEVE DR. BLASEY FORD. THE WHITE HOUSE MUST WITHDRAW KAVANAUGH, OR THE SENATE MUST REJECT: “Dr. Christine Blasey Ford has bravely come forward, delivered credible and compelling testimony about her sexual assault, and has provided significant detail that would allow the Senate Judiciary Committee to corroborate her allegations. Despite this, Donald Trump, Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have refused to fully investigate her claims or halt the proceedings to gather more information… This is unacceptable,” said HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin). “In light of what we have heard, and Senator Grassley’s refusal to pursue an FBI investigation, the Trump-Pence Administration must withdraw Kavanaugh’s nomination immediately. If they do not, members of the Senate must oppose and vote against his confirmation.” More from HRC.

  • The American Bar Association (ABA) has called for a delay in the consideration of Kavanaugh until an FBI investigation is completed. More from CNN.
  • Today at noon, HRC will join our partners and stand in solidarity with sexual assault survivors everywhere.

Join @HRC & our partners as we stand in solidarity w/ sexual assault survivors everywhere & send a clear message that we will not be silenced. TOMORROW AT NOON, make your voices heard & demand the Senate vote NO on Kavanaugh.

FIRED UP FRIDAY — THE CREATOR OF THE TRANS FLAG HAS A MESSAGE FOR ALL… VOTE!

WE MUST ADDRESS THE EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE AGAINST TRANS PEOPLE — 21 AMERICANS KILLED THIS YEAR: Last week, Nikki Enriquez, a 28-year-old Latinx transgender woman who lived in Laredo, Texas, was allegedly killed by an intel supervisor for the U.S. Border Patrol. Alarmingly, Enriquez’s death is the fifth known killing of a trans woman of color in the last three weeks alone. It also marks the 21st known killing of a transgender or gender-expansive person in 2018. More from USA Today.

HRC ENDORSES TONY EVERS FOR WISCONSIN GOVERNOR: “HRC is proud to endorse Tony Evers for Governor of Wisconsin,” said HRC Wisconsin State Director Wendy Strout. “After seven years of Scott Walker’s attacks on our community, it’s more important than ever we elect a pro-equality governor who will fight day in and day out to uphold the Wisconsin values of fairness, justice and equality. Superintendent Evers has been a tireless ally for LGBTQ Wisconsinites, and he will be a vital voice for the community and all Wisconsinites in the Governor’s mansion.” More from HRC and Wisconsin Gazette.

ANTI-LGBTQ EXTREMISTS CONTINUE TO POUR MONEY INTO CAMPAIGN TO DEFEAT THE FIRST OPENLY LESBIAN SENATOR IN U.S. HISTORY: Susan B. Anthony List, an anti-LGBTQ and anti-reproductive health care group, held a fundraiser for Leah Vukmir, who is running against champion for equality Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI). Vukmir has derailed efforts to pass common-sense protections for the LGBTQ community, including for LGBTQ youth facing discrimination and bullying at school. She has consistently voted against pro-equality legislation and has pushed for a license to discriminate in the health care system that would prioritize  physicians’ beliefs over life-saving patient care. More from Washington Blade.

TRANS RIGHTS ARE ON THE BALLOT IN MASSACHUSETTS: On Nov. 6, Massachusetts voters will decide the fate of a non-discrimination law that protects transgender people in public spaces. Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed the non-discrimination bill into law in July 2016, and it went into effect in October 2016. Opponents of equality used anti-transgender tactics and messages to get Question 3, which would repeal these non-discrimination protections, on the ballot this election. More from Boston.com.

WOMEN’S SHELTER SUES CITY OF ANCHORAGE FOR RIGHT TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST TRANSGENDER WOMEN: In April, voters soundly rejected Proposition 1 — a dangerous ballot measure that sought to eliminate existing municipal non-discrimination protections for transgender people. More from Metro Weekly.
