HRC JOINS MORE THAN 120 CIVIL RIGHTS AND ADVOCACY GROUPS CALLING FOR LONGER COMMENT PERIOD ON EXTENSIVE TITLE IX CHANGES: They are urging Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and her civil rights chief Kenneth Marcus to add 60 days to the comment period for their proposed far-reaching overhaul of rules for how schools respond to sexual harassment and assault allegations. “This is a particularly busy time for students, who are juggling final exams, preparations for winter break, and traveling home for the holidays. Teachers and school administrators are similarly overburdened,” the letter reads. “We ask that the comment period be extended to accommodate these unique challenges faced by students and educators—those whose rights and obligations will be most affected by these proposed changes.” More from National Women’s Law Center and Politico.

He was assassinated less than a year later on November 27, 1978. More from HRC and NPR.

Uncle Harvey predicated his own assassination and left these words, 40 years ago, so that we all may live open and authentic lives. His dream for our visibility lives on in all who take off the masks that societal prejudice would have us wear. Thank you Uncle Harvey! #HarveyMilk pic.twitter.com/CB0hyfwfNe
